The Fantasy RPG Design Challenge is organized by Brent P. Newhall. The challenge has been iterated three times in 2016, and challenges designers to design a fantasy tabletop RPG without many standard (stereotypical) fantasy elements, including: no swords or guns; no dungeons; no undead, demons, devils, barbarians, elves, dwarves, or halflings; no Medieval European setting; and no Vancian magic. In addition, the characters "cannot be generic adventurers for hire." The nuances of the rules have varied by iteration.
The first competition iteration (February 2016) had nine entries (two were disqualified because of deadlines). The second competition iteration (April 2016) had two entries. The third competition iteration (August 2016) had fourteen entries (one was disqualified because it was written before the challenge).
