What do you do when you discover that your ROLL20 (or any other virtual) gaming group will have too few players and it is too late to cancel?

(I rephrased a past question, hope it's ok)

What are the main challenges, in the areas of Natural and Social Sciences, that need to be addressed to create a believable Hard Science-Fiction RPG ?

The idea for this question was generated by this article:

"In the vacuum of space, SF RPGs suck"

https://postworldgames.com/2015/10/20/in-the-vacuum-of-space...

I disagree with so many points of that article I don't think I could answer a QOTD based on it without lighting my computer on fire from the fast and furious rage that would fuel my typing.

The author's biases shine through to the point of making the article nothing but useless opinion. I'm still pissed at reading that drivel.

Edit: The QOTD as you phrased it would be interesting... but not if I have to use that article as a basis for anything!

Correction made. Sorry for the confusion.

Maybe it's time for the end of 2018 cliche but very informative questions, like:

The best RPG book you read in 2018, best session you had, best movie you watched, best book you read, best album, best whatever.

And we could also make a worst QOTD of the same questions or in the same thread. Best and Worst.

OR alternatively the worst of the above.

All the QOTDs themselves were « Best », as far as I am concerned.

I'm feeling a strange compulsion to ask this... I can't quite put my finger on why...

Are you aware of the RPGGeek's Genre page (https://rpggeek.com/browse/rpggenre) and do you use it?

How often do you buy on an impulse ?

Had the idea of asking this question based on a hilarious post a just read a few seconds ago:

The system is really interesting, and it's something I could actually finish.
I haven't played it enough to gauge whether the flow seems right.

How Board Game Geek Works:

11.00 am stumble on thread
11.07 am read a reference to an unheard of game, Winter Thunder
11.10 am click the link to read up on Winter Thunder
11.11 am think, 'hmm, this looks interesting'
11.12 am see that there is a brand new copy available in the Market
11.13 am decide I don't actually need it, and I've got Christmas bills to pay anyway, but I'll consider it over the next day or two
11.14 am contact seller and buy Winter Thunder

And what percentage of the time are you "glad you did" vs "regret you did"?

What sort of playful behaviors do you or other players engage in that are not part of the game itself?

Examples could include arranging your dice in some order (stacking, alining...), doing a character-specific voice, drawing your character, doodling, setting yourself meta-goals (e.g. have only even or only odd values on your character sheet etc.)...

It seems that in many cases, realism is based on having a crunchy or difficult to learn system. What is the most realistic at the same time least crunchy/easy to learn system?

How do you prevent emotional themes like love, relationships, loss (of favorite rare equipment, circle of life), coming of age, predjudice, etc. from becoming too silly, upsetting, or contentious? If your answer would be "find the right group", how do you find these players?

To rephrase, how do you get players to play out a more emotional scene somewhat sincerely? In general, these would be games played with good friends in a comfortable setting but mostly they want D&D min/maxing and dungeon crawling.

This might be better phrased to elicit specific examples. Currently it will draw rather broad manifestos methinks.
