In Praise of Random
exquisite, principle
pious, scratches
begging, madness

Random number generation has been a part of games since games were invented. The first dice yet discovered were d4, dating to the 24th century BC. Dungeons & Dragons (Woodgrain Box & White Box Sets) not only used a variety of dice (not included) but featured numerous random tables (to determine random monsters). The Strategic Review (Volume 1, Issue 1) - the first-ever issue of arguably the first-ever RPG periodical - presented a major system of random tables to generate dungeons for "solo" adventuring. These later were revised and reproduced in Dungeon Masters Guide (AD&D 1e). The trend, if anything, has only increased. More dice, more dice systems, and more random tables. One of the perpetually most popular items on RPGGeek is Mythic Game Master Emulator - it boils down to a random table.

Because September not only is Mold Awareness Month but also National Honey Month, it's time to have a random design challenge!

mbmbThe Goalmbmb

In this challenge, your primary goal is to create and post a random table, by Friday, September 30, 2016. Anyone with an RPG Geek account can participate. The secondary goal is to have fun and become an internationally famous celebrity.

The Prizes

Those who complete the challenge will receive a random microbadge and I also will distribute any tips received equally among all participants. Plus, I'll tip every completed entry with 2d6 mb from my personal dragon’s hoard.

The Details

To complete the challenge, you must:

A Create a random table and post it to this thread. Your random table should contain at least a dozen-ish items up to about a hundred-ish items (or more if it seems to be required). It doesn't have to be text but it can be. It can be an image, a map, a dice-drop table, any combination of these, or whatever you can imagine that includes a random determination process. It should have a reasonably "standard" method of use (all I mean by that is: 2d12 good, 2d16 OK, 2d37 not good).

B At the end of the challenge I'm going to take all the entries and put them into a PDF and publish it on RPGGeek as a free, downloadable file. If you want complete control over how your random table looks, then provide it in PNG or PDF format, for standard letter size paper. If you don't want your entry included, please so note in your post. The entry will be credited to whatever name you specify or to your user name if you don't specify.

X You can enter more than once if you'd like. To keep it sane, let's say no more than 1d4 = (4) = 4 entries per person.

Y Your entry can be genre specific but should not be game system specific, unless it absolutely has to be. If it has to be, make sure you specify the game system in a clear way.

This contest is going to follow the "Be a Good Chap" code, popular on BGG (that other, "also-ran" site):

mb We're all good chaps, so behave
mb We're friendly, honest, and err on the side of being good to each other
mb If we make mistakes we own up, apologize, and make good as far as possible
mb We treat others as we'd want to be treated
mb We're here to have spiffing fun
mb We use the Oxford comma in all our sentences (this is Tyraziel’s rule and may not be impugned)
mb Good Chaps don't make public accusations

FAQ

Q: Can I participate in a group effort to complete the challenge? A: Yes. Please note all participants who want to be credited.

Q: Can I chose the microbadge I get? A: Yes. As long as you chose the one you get.

Q: What's that poem at the top? A: It's a randomly generated string of words I made using an online random poem generator.

Can I have a nested chart if I'm still under 100 items total? Like roll 1d6 to choose a chart then roll 1d4 for an item on that cart?

You can do either. But if it's not here on this thread I might not see it, etc. Caveat scriptor.

I just had a delightful idea and a productive idea, not necessarily coinciding with one another.

After visiting the treasury of the Munich Residenz and seeing all the priceless artefacts and objects, I was inspired: this is what a treasure hoard looks like! This contest might inspire me to make a chart to generate a variety of art objects. Not sure it would fit in the maximum of 100 entries though...

Clark, if I might be so bold as to sugest people do NOT post their entries to this thread, but instead you create a Geeklist to which they can add their entries.

That way the entries do not get "lost" in the thread, which might run to many pages long, but instead are all nice and neat and tidy in one place.

Cool idea! I always liked non-standard treasure. It's so much more interesting to find things other than "50,000 gp"

I was thinking something very similar, but focusing on general treasure, instead of art.

You could solve this problem by making a few different tables. Like 1-10 would be "statue, painting, vase, book, etc." and another one would be "depicting XYZ"

I just came up with a nice simple idea for a 6x6 table for use as a dungeon.

I won't say more cause it would give too much away right now lol.

Yeah, but if you'd add up all the entries for all the tables, I'm not sure I could stay within the limit of 100...

Keep in mind that the limit seems to be a soft cap, per Clark. "Or more if it seems to be required"

Urist McDwarf has created a work of art. It is a book called "Down Among the Titans." It is bound in alpaca leather. On the cover is embossed a colossal turtle eating the roots of a tree. It contains prose poetry about an excursion into a cavern.
Drema McDwarf picks up the book called "Down Among the Titans."
Drema McDwarf strikes Urist McDwarf on the jaw with a book, bruising the muscle and breaking the bone.
