Recently I heard somebody tell a story when somebody at their table had to roll a 7 on a d6. They rolled anyway, the dice broke in half, showing a total of seven.

I'm less interested whether people think this is a valid roll (as a GM, I'd totally go with it). Instead I'm interested if any of you know of similar stories or have had something like this happen at your table. (I know there are medieval stories about winning a game or wager because a die breaks and thereby produces a higher result.)

I've heard there might be a printed story like this in the Scorpion handbook for Legends of the Five Rings. If any of you can give me a scan of that, that would be fabulous.

I have witnessed a d20 breaking while rolling. A corner was chipped out. The die had years of Rolemaster (they rolled d20 instead of d10) behind it...

It's a tale I've been told a few times (by different people who heard it second-hand), but I think it's one of the hobby's tall tales.

I do not think I know somebody who experienced firsthand the exact thing you described, but I know of such connected stories :
* One of my cousin's d10 had one eroded edge. An old set, I don't know if it was due to wear or an accident.

* A d4 had a hard landing after falling off our table, chipping a bit of one edge.

I do think that a d6 shattering is extremely unlikely, if it's even possible.

(now you mention this story, a bit of stress-test of my father's old set may be in order )

Yeah, I'm not buying the story, either.

I did once make a Car Wars roll on a d6, though, where 1-3 would end up killing my character one way, 4-6 another, with the roll only being made to determine where the wreckage would wind up. The die ended up perfectly balanced on its edge, and a narrow escape was immediately unanimously agreed upon by everyone present.

No breakages to tell of, though.

I've never seen a dice break.

However, the whole set of polyhedral dice that came with Dungeons & Dragons Basic Set (First Edition) gradually wore away into roundish blobs. Since I was there for most of the rolling, I suppose I was present for thousands of tiny breaks. And we'd occasionally find tiny little flecks of a die. But I never saw it happening.

Story not found.

Found it. It is about the Battle of the Plains of Fortunes, Imperial year 554. A Scorpion Clan general offers a Crab general to play out their battle with dice, so that the victor can resist an oncoming Lion attack. The two generals roll twelve and twelve again, until the Scorpion rolls a 6 and the other die breaks. The three bits make up 13, so he wins. Page 32 of my French sourcebook.

(This story contradicts the book's rules on gambling, however, because Rokugani dice do not have pips...)

I've had one d6 break in my life. It was an odd looking one with very sharp edges and donut shaped pips. It broke in half during a completely uneventful roll.

Thanks for all the replies!

Here's a d6 that broke not during a roll, but in the dice bag:
http://rpg.brentnewhall.com/2017/02/have-you-ever-had-a-die-...

The L5R story closely resembles a Norse saga (two kings gambling over who owns the island of Hisingen IIRC). Thanks for looking it up! If anybody owns the English book and would be willing to provide me with a scan of that page...

Edit: I came across a scan on Scribd and took a screenshot of the relevant paragraph, so I'm good! (Based on the medieval stories, I'm curious about this narrative element and where it has traveled to, so the L5R bit would be worth quoting/referencing if I ever get to write down a summary of my findings.)

Any idea in which book that would be? I'm assuming you're talking about a discworld novel.

I haven't ever seen a die break during a game. The closest I've gotten was a coin-flip in a record store, back in college when I didn't have a lot of spending money and was trying to decide whether to buy Frank Zappa's Shut Up and Play Your Guitar or his later Guitar album. I flipped a quarter but missed the catch: the coin stuck edge-up in the store's carpet, so I resigned myself to my fate and bought both albums.

Yeah, Cohen is challenged by Fate to a die duel and Fate rolls a 6, so Cohen rolls, and chops the die in twain in mid-air, so the two halves land and show a sum of 7 - so he successfully cheated fate.

And again, this is an example of a writer forgetting his own cannon, because when you see people (Gods, mortals, Death) playing dice in most Discworld books, the dice have eight sides... so rolling higher than 6 is quite easy...

I rage chuck my dice whenever I need a higher-than-possible roll hoping for a break. Sometimes I do simply do it when I don't have the 10 to take 10.

Seriously though, I've never had dice break mid-game, but as a dice manufacturer I have smashed dice with a hammer to check internal quality.

I had a d4 break after rolling it. It was one of my original dice from by D&D Expert Box Set. The plastic had dried out and became brittle. It's the only die I have ever seen break with use.

I've had some dice break while playing SFB, but never during an RPG.

On the other hand, a player was using my big brass dice, and broke his own toe with the die. Does that count?

Maybe searching for dice stacking tutorial will help you.

Edit: I don't have sound on the computer I'm on right now, and haven't watched the whole video, but this seems to show a bit of it:
