Just saying, could the links one post #1 be added.

I often want to look back on what we all did and it is a pain to browse

I'm horrid at updating that, but I'll try to get to it this weekend.

Come and talk about your favourite use of NPCs, especially those close to the PCs or who showed change and growth in their personalities at the latest Behind the Screen:

Behind the Screen #32 - Keeping Your Friends Close and Your Enemies Closer: Running a Campaign with NPCs that Matter

Cheers!

I have a vague conception of an article about designing setbacks and making them meaningful. Bringing in some concepts about loss aversion etc. about how to lessen the blow and make a setback into part of the campaign story.

I wouldn't be able to put it together any time soon (certainly not in August, but maybe September), but I just thought I'd throw it out there an see if there's any interest?

I upvoted but on second thought, is that not kinda same as the already-done "Failure Does Not Mean Failure" ?

I read that article before I posted. While there is some overlap, that article focuses on failure from a particular die roll and how to weave it into the narrative. I was thinking more about major setbacks to the characters' goals - loss of a PC, failure to stop the evil plan in time, etc., and how to keep the players engaged despite failure and how to weave it into the overall campaign arc.

So similar premise, different scale.

I think this sounds like a great topic - such setbacks are a staple of fiction of all kinds but hard to implement in many RPGs.

I would suggest that BFL take september the 1st, as it was the date of a historically unprecendented setback (1939), and the world still rose to the challenge in the end.

I may post it early - as in, on the 13th. It's getting a bit long, and I'm writing largely in bullet list form...
Edit to add: 4420 words, counting tags and boilerplate.

If no one else comes forward, I'll do another on "Plot Train & the Narrative Game", but I'd rather push that off until mid-september if someone else has something to go between.

I'll put something up on September 1st. It will likely be about either how horror differs from fantasy (similiar to the article I did on how scifi differs from fantasy). Or I'll do one on tips for playing effects that interfere with player autonomy, like mind control, charm, or social skills like Intimidation or Seduction.

Someday I'll do the romance article I want. Someday.

In which case, I'll take the mid-month (15th Sep) - day before my BD.

I thought I'd been given 1st September, but I'm happy to have a bit longer - I've got the article more or less mapped out in my head, but not sure when I'm going to have the time to commit it to paper!

So if there's a 1st September and 15th September slot claimed, I'll take 1st October. No article title yet, but the theme is how to make defeats and setbacks entertaining rather than frustrating for your players.

You had said, "maybe September", so I figured you would be okay with being bumped.
