I'd like to see your response to my negotiation article. My perspective tends to come at things from a theory angle first (BATNA!) and I'd appreciate the perspective of someone that takes a more nuts-and-bolts look at it.

I kept meaning to post something in that... but this has been a crazy two weeks at work and I'm utterly burned out...

I will try to have my Fairy Tale/Legend/Myth article done by then!

Is there a template to use for the format, or is it sort of anything goes?

Anything goes! Just include the following blurb in some form or another either at the top or bottom of your article.

These are a series of articles written by RPG Geek Games Masters (GMs) designed to provoke conversation, idea-sharing and to give other people helpful insights into what the author thinks makes for a better GM and a better experience for all involved with the game. Feel free to offer up your own opinions on the subject, but keep to the rules of RPGG when doing so. Basically, that means be courteous and don't shoot someone down in flames for their opinion!

Behind the Screen 48: Fairy Tales, Legends, and Myths

You can kind of see why I said I was writing a veritable novel in the QOTD thread.

Jackasses? You let a whole column get stalled and strafed on account of a couple of jackasses? What the hell's the matter with you?

Riffing off of Carrie's article today gives me an idea for a BtS. I propose:

"Tonal characteristics of different editions of Dungeons and Dragons"

It's still just a concept in my mind, but the idea is to briefly trace some of the sources for each edition of D&D and how the tone of the game has evolved through five (six? seven?) editions.

What do y'all think?

Examples from other systems might be nice too.

You'll have to lean on someone else for that. D&D is about the only game I really understand across multiple editions. (Maybe Shadowrun, also, but man, I can't go there right now.)

I find it most interesting for D&D because there are such sweeping tonal changes from edition to edition, and they are not explicit to the game system. In fact, I hadn't ever really considered this before, but I think this might be a large part of the Edition Wars: The tonal shifts in the game bothered people who wanted That Thing They Used to Have, or satisfied some group That Thinks This Is The Right Way to D&D. And the lack of an explicit statement, or even strong implicit cues about the system, leads people to misinterpret what the authors were driving at in a particular edition.

Rob, I think it's an excellent idea for an article. It's historical and likely traces trends in the RPG hobby as much as it is about a particular game. I would enjoy reading it.

...

I have the kernel of an idea for an article about use of maps in games. I use them a LOT as a GM, and at different levels (world maps, cities, battle maps, etc.) so I'm starting to get some insight into how they can enhance games in ways beyond the obvious. But I also don't have a great handle on how I'd organize it, or how broad I'd want to make it. It'll likely have to percolate for a period of months before I revisit.
