This is my annual analysis of RPG events at Gen Con in terms of volume. For some reason, people other than me have been interested in the results in previous years!

Again this year, I'm just going to do one round of analysis. The events have been live for a few weeks.

Also, again, I did minimal normalizing of the Game Systems which amounted to fixing a few typos.

The data does include LARPS, Games on Demand, and Organized Play (such as RPGA) events.

Past years:

[Gen Con 2013] Most Seats available by System
[Gen Con 2014] Most seats available by System
[Gen Con 2015] Most RPG seats by System
[Gen Con 2016] Most Seats by System
[Gen Con 2017] Most Seats by System

Keep in mind that Games on Demand uses generic tickets, so the filled is 0%.

Pathfinder events are down from last year while Starfinder is up.

Here's who is running the events.

Baldman runs the organized D&D events.

Blanks should be individual, independent GMs. Kudos to them!

Holy crap that is a lot of Dungeon Crawl Classics!

EDIT: should be noted that Games On Demand is generics only, so it will never be "filled" like other events.

I noticed this as well. The growth of DCC is pretty impressive. It happens to be my favorite rpg, so I'm delighted.

Dumb question. This means ten hours, right?

Those individuals are truly dedicated to the hobby.

Correct! The duration is in hours.

I agree completely. Four hours is pushing it for me, but I'm picky and/or have bad luck.

True. I ran a 10hr AD&D event a few years ago.

Are you allowed bathroom breaks? Can you eat at the table? Does Dominoes deliver to tables at GenCon?

Can you take a mid-game nap?

Thanks Bruce. It's a huge drop for pathfinder. 25% drop compared to last year (and all the years you've been doing this). Which suggests that over the last 1-2 years 5e is actually capturing pathfinder players.

John, did that 25% get taken over by Starfinder, or are you adding the two together?

It could be that Paizo has a fixed amount of floor space and has decided to move a large portion to the new game.

EDIT: I remembered that Bruce posted the link from last year at the top, so I can do the math myself...

Last year Pathfinder had 10866 seats.

This year, Pathfinder has 7494, but Starfinder has 2970. That's 10464 total. This makes me think this is more likely about Paizo making a business decision than about actual drop in demand for Pathfinder.

This is true. Paizo has one of the ballroom's for its official events.

If these are real questions, the answer is 'yes' to all three.

Never been to a convention that would allow outside food to be delivered. At best, you could bring in outside food. In some cases, they have not even allowed that.

GenCon must be the busiest time of year for pizza places then.

Ya, I allowed bathroom breaks whenever needed, we just kept playing and someone took over the character until the person returned, or I just made them not in the scene so to speak.

SteamCraft wrote:

Ya, eating is fine is moderation, not a 3 course extravagent fine meal, but a pizza, burger, or something that is generally contained in the player's own gaming space that they could finish reasonably fast without very much mess or offensive odour.

SteamCraft wrote:

I was gaming at one of the officially connected hotel spaces (JW Marriot) and pizza was ordered/delivered to my table by a couple of the players if I remember correctly. I can't remember if it was Dominos though. I have had other shorter games of AD&D that I've GM'd in the same location in previous years, and I believe someone ordered a pizza then as well. I have been at a bunch of other GM's shorter games where people ordered/brought pizza and other food also.

However, I'm pretty sure every time that it was in an official Hotel game space and not directly in the convention centre itself. The convention centre I believe has a distinct policy against outside food being brought in. How much that is actually enforced is debatable, but I wouldn't want to push the envelope when I'm hungry so I caution against it; unless it's in small inconspicuous portions. I'm pretty sure I've seen people eating as such now and then inside the convention centre without hassle in the past. I'm also pretty sure that Gen Con has an official affiliation to Hot Box pizza as a sponsor so that might be allowed in without any threat of hassle.

To note also, that in my game we stopped for about a half hour or so a couple of times completely when collectively people got hungry to resupply for coffee/drinks and get food for dinner. I just went with the group flow on this when needed.

Hey man, I'm not going to stop you. Talk to your party and see if they're cool with it. If they want to run your character while you nap and everyone's ok with it, then go for it (though best to ask beforehand). laugh

I have to admit, I learned A LOT in relation to pacing/expectations from that 10hr game, especially on the way a longer adventure at a convention should be structured and set up in a practical creative way. It was a concerning but ultimately very rewarding experience. I was unsure how it would go in the beginning and hesitant to try it out, but glad I tried it out at least once. I may do it again in the future depending on what kind of adventure/experience I have in mind.

Overall though, I think that the large convention experiences are most suited to events between 4-6hrs in length. This definitely is not to detract any GMs away from thinking about running longer events (or detract from those events themselves in general) at Gen Con which have their place there --only that ideally 4-6hr events seem to work better for most attendees of a convention of that size since a good portion of attendees tend to look to try to play/sample as many different events as possible.
