She asked me why the singer's name was Alice
I said, "Listen baby, you really wouldn't understand."

She finally finds Billy down at the Italian cafe
When he's drunk it's hard to understand what Billy says
But then he mumbles in his coffee and he suddenly roars

Hating, waiting
"Hey boy" they shout, "have you got any money?"

That is one of my all-time favorite songs; particularly the version with Holly Vincent and Joey Ramone.
I'll let someone else finish it off, and if it doesn't happen in a timely manner then I'll do the deed.

Well I guess that's so, we don't have a plot
But at least I'm sure of all the things we got.

There she stood in the doorway

.. oh, and...
MABBY, I seem to be able to get your lyrics but pretty much none of the newer-fangled stuff.

And I was thinking to myself
'This could be heaven or this could be Hell'
(from Hotel California in case that was not obvious to everyone)

'Cause I'm gonna make you see
There's nobody else here
No one like me.

I'm special (special!)
So special (special!)

That took a minute or two, but it finally came to me.

I have a wide mix of old and new music that I listen to.
Unless it's rap, which I wouldn't have a chance with, I do know a lot of lyrics.
I should try testing you out with some of my favorite Aussie bands (and I don't mean AC DC).
But, in the meantime, I'll go back to a personal favorite band of mine:

I'll shine up my old brown shoes.
I'll put on a brand new shirt
I'll get home early from work

So long as they're 80s pub bands, I have a better than average chance
But I don't think I know the latest lyric, it isn't ringing any bells for me.

1) NOT from an Aussie band
2) Barely 1980-- 1978 is my guess, but it was a big enough hit that it would have been played into the '80s
3) Come on-- you got this....

I cheated and looked up the lyrics - the band and the song are known to me, but I don't know it well enough to be familiar with the lyrics.

OK then, on to a new one.

Right over the middle of the plate, (to use a baseball analogy) for an Austrailian:

Now the man meets a woman unlike all the rest
Well he doesn't know it yet, but he's out of his depth

It's from a Paul Kelly song, so that narrows it down to, what, 500 songs or so?

How are you with "Weddings, Parties, Anything" songs?
Or Kasey Chambers? The Whitlams?

Edit: The previous lyric was from the song "Deeper Water".

My range of music familiarity is really limited - it just happens that a lot of the lyrics you posted fit that.
Of that list, only Weddings, Parties, Anything - the others I recognise but are too recent for me to know the music. I stopped listening to the radio in the early 90s, when rap and rap-like music seemed to dominate. I went backwards and "discovered" 70s music.
The first Paul Kelly song that I think of is Dumb Things. Had you posted lyrics from Coloured Girls era Paul Kelly, I might have recognised it, but not the later stuff.

If it was played heavily on the radio in the 80s I have a chance, if the lyrics are distinct. There's only a handful of miscellaneous songs that I know all the lyrics to, though. And a lot of the bands I listened to in the 80s may be unheard of outside Australia & NZ. The Models, The Angels, Icehouse, DiVinyls, The Triffids, Hunters & Collectors, Redgum, Uncanny X-Men, V-Capri (a local Perth band), Dragon, Hoodoo Gurus, Skyhooks. And some that did OK internationally I think - Men at Work, Crowded House, INXS, Cold Chisel.

I saw Hunters and Collectors live-- the loudest indoor concert that I've ever attended. My sternum was vibrating.
I also saw Hoodoo Gurus once. I really dig The Angels-- rebranded as "Angel City" over here.
The Whitlams were awesome, in spite of their '90s and '00s heritage.

So I'll move things along with some more "mainstream" lyrics. '80s.

Hey little sister, who is it you're with?
Hey little sister, what's your vice or wish?

One more look and I forget everything
Mamma mia, here I go again

(and I'd have gotten the previous one, too, but I was sleeping!)

But I should have known this right from the start

But love can break your heart

Added some more lyrics (completing the verse), and a hint: the line immediately before the first lyric I posted is the name of the song, and the next line after this verse is the start of the chorus. (And the artist is neither Australian nor American.)

I'll send an S.O.S. to the world

(I knew the song yesterday, from the first lyric clue, but I was on a phone iinstead of a computer and I wasn't ready with a new artist.)

Now the man in the back
Is ready to crack as he raises his hands to the sky
