Dark Lord Cthanta has bade me the following task:

Flipping randomly through the English Dictionary, locate 26 words that you never knew existed, the more obscure the better. Post these words, with their definitions, on the Secret Santa thread. Each distinct letter must have it's own word.

To be honest, I had to cheat as I don't own a dictionary, so instead I found an online one and randomly selected a page:

A: Ascogonium -a female reproductive body in some ascomycetous fungi in which, after fertilization, the asci develop

B: Bousingken - a drinking house frequented by thieves or other disreputable characters

C: Cantus firmus - an existing melody used as the basis for a new polyphonic composition

D: Domanial - of or relating to a domain

E: Eurokous -of or relating to euroky

F: Fibril - a small fibre or part of a fibre

G: Groschen - a former Austrian monetary unit worth one hundredth of a schilling

H: Homoousian - a Christian who believes that the Son is of the same substance as the Father

I: Invidious - If you describe a task or job as invidious, you mean that it is unpleasant because it is likely to make you unpopular

J: Jazerant - a coat of armour composed of metal plates sewn onto cloth

K: Kouprey - a large wild member of the cattle tribe, Box sauveli, of SE Asia, having a blackish-brown body and white legs: an endangered species

L: Liquidambar - any deciduous tree of the hamamelidaceous genus Liquidambar, of Asia and North and Central America, with star-shaped leaves, and exuding a yellow aromatic balsam

M: Minnick - to behave in a fussy way, esp with regards to the foods one chooses to eat

N: Nonhygroscopic - not hygroscopic or able to retain water

O: Oscheal - relating to or resembling the scrotum

P: Plutology - the study of wealth

Q: Quadrigeminal - of or relating to a group of four muscles which rotate the thigh laterally

R: Resveratrol - a compound found in red grapes, mulberries, peanuts, and certain plants, used medicinally as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory

S: Soffioni - holes in a volcano through which steam is emitted

T: Tarsometatarsus - a bone in the lower part of a bird's leg consisting of the metatarsal bones and some of the tarsal bones fused together

U: Ultramontane - on the other side of the mountains, esp the Alps, from the speaker or writer

V: Vergency - an inclination or tendency; the act of verging or approaching

W: Wanchancy -unlucky

X: Xanthophyl -any of a group of yellow carotenoid pigments occurring in plant and animal tissue

Y: Ythundered - struck by a thunderbolt

Z: Zendik - an unbeliever or atheist; heretic

Cthanta bade me to write a missive using the Twelve Days of Christmas as a base:

On the first day of Cthantamas my true love sent to me:
An earworm whispering words of the Necronomicon.

On the second day of Cthantamas, after getting no sleep, my true love sent to me:
Two depraved Dark Young,
and an earworm whispering words of the Necronomicon.

On the third day of Cthantamas, sleep deprived and crotchety, my true love sent to me:
Three guttering Lamps of Alhazred,
Two depraved Dark Young,
and an earworm whispering words of the Necronomicon.

On the fourth day of Cthantamas, don't talk to me! My true love sent to me:
Four baying Hounds of Tindalos,
Three guttering Lamps of Alhazred,
Two depraved Dark Young,
and an earworm whispering words of the Necronomicon.

On the fifth day of Cthantamas I wanted to plunge a pencil into my brain, and yet my true love sent to me:
Five mindless Cultists Chanting!
Four baying Hounds of Tindalos,
Three guttering Lamps of Alhazred,
Two depraved Dark Young,
and an earworm whispering words of the Necronomicon.

On the sixth day of Cthantamas I screamed to the void! Once more my true love sent to me:
Six incandescent Star Stones of Mnar,
Five mindless Cultists Chanting!
Four baying Hounds of Tindalos,
Three guttering Lamps of Alhazred,
Two depraved Dark Young,
and an earworm whispering words of the Necronomicon.

On the seventh day of Cthantamas the gibbering wreck that I now am took a gift that my true love sent to me:
Seven Eldritch Masks of Nyarlathotep,
Six incandescent Star Stones of Mnar,
Five mindless Cultists Chanting!
Four baying Hounds of Tindalos,
Three guttering Lamps of Alhazred,
Two depraved Dark Young,
and an earworm whispering words of the Necronomicon.

On the eighth day of Cthantamas you would have thought a zombie walked while my true love sent to me:
Eight Sticky Signs of the King in Yellow,
Seven Eldritch Masks of Nyarlathotep,
Six incandescent Star Stones of Mnar,
Five mindless Cultists Chanting!
Four baying Hounds of Tindalos,
Three guttering Lamps of Alhazred,
Two depraved Dark Young,
and an earworm whispering words of the Necronomicon.

On the ninth day of Cthantamas I just sat quietly in a corner, rocking, waiting for my true love to send unto me:
Nine Yithian Tabula Rasa Devices (used),
Eight Sticky Signs of the King in Yellow,
Seven Eldritch Masks of Nyarlathotep,
Six incandescent Star Stones of Mnar,
Five mindless Cultists Chanting!
Four baying Hounds of Tindalos,
Three guttering Lamps of Alhazred,
Two depraved Dark Young,
and an earworm whispering words of the Necronomicon.

On the tenth day of Cthantamas words came unbidden....Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn. I think my true love sent to me:
Ten dusty Grimoire Tomes,
Nine Yithian Tabula Rasa Devices (used),
Eight Sticky Signs of the King in Yellow,
Seven Eldritch Masks of Nyarlathotep,
Six incandescent Star Stones of Mnar,
Five mindless Cultists Chanting!
Four baying Hounds of Tindalos,
Three guttering Lamps of Alhazred,
Two depraved Dark Young,
and an earworm whispering words of the Necronomicon.

On the eleventh day of Cthantamas my chalk ran out while my walls, floors and ceilings are covered in...in...my true love sent to me:
Eleven slimy Tentacles reaching.....
Ten dusty Grimoire Tomes,
Nine Yithian Tabula Rasa Devices (used),
Eight Sticky Signs of the King in Yellow,
Seven Eldritch Masks of Nyarlathotep,
Six incandescent Star Stones of Mnar,
Five mindless Cultists Chanting!
Four baying Hounds of Tindalos,
Three guttering Lamps of Alhazred,
Two depraved Dark Young,
and an earworm whispering words of the Necronomicon.

On the twelfth ....I think it's the twelfth.... No chalk! Scratching runes using fingers, the blood ran freely, and yet my true love sent to me:
Twelve shuffling Dimensional Shamblers,
Eleven slimy Tentacles reaching.....
Ten dusty Grimoire Tomes,
Nine Yithian Tabula Rasa Devices (used),
Eight Sticky Signs of the King in Yellow,
Seven Eldritch Masks of Nyarlathotep,
Six incandescent Star Stones of Mnar,
Five mindless Cultists Chanting!
Four baying Hounds of Tindalos,
Three guttering Lamps of Alhazred,
Two depraved Dark Young,
and an earworm whispering words of the Necronomicon.

I think we normally piggy-back on the BGG list: https://www.boardgamegeek.com/wiki/page/Secret_Santa_Stores

From that list, Noble Knight (Noble Knight Games - http://www.nobleknight.com/) stands out to me as a great RPG choice. (See Jay's note below however.)

Also, Amazon can be a good choice.

I’m not a big fan of Noble Knight after my last few interactions with them. To add to the above list, Powell’s Books has a lot of new and used RPGs and offers free shipping after a certain amount - www.powells.com

A couple things to keep in mind is that a lot of US publishers have storefronts so you can purchase directly from them, and DTRPG has a print on demand service with inexpensive shipping - www.drivethrurpg.com

Someone may know differently but for a while they were notorious for taking pictures from BGG without permission and slapping their logo on them for ebay sales. I think they had been asked multiple times and with examples to stop but failed to do so.

Not sure if that's still ongoing or not. Here's a thread
Asking Noble Knight Games to end years of commercial use of BGG images w/o user permission

Speaking only for myself, I've had 99% good experiences with Noble Knight; they have a great and continually rotating selection, grade their conditions extremely accurately (if that's an issue for people), and their proximity to where I live is convenient. They tend to be a little overpriced--which is fine if you don't want to deal with the uncertainty and sniping of eBay--but you know what you're getting and they pack well for shipping (I think I've had one smashed-up book arrive from them in the dozen or so transactions I've had with them).

Keep in mind that this is just my experience with them.

Things have just changed in regards to customer service. It used to be a great company, but now they do some things that I find distasteful. One example is marking a book as out of print when they really mean out of distribution. An example is a book you can buy directly from the publisher at normal MSRP but on Noble Knight it'll be marked as out of print with a higher price because they can't get it from a distributor.

When I talked to Aaron about it his explanation was kind of insulting, that gamers were willing to pay a higher price for convenience (being able to buy from multiple publishers in one transaction, lower shipping cost when doing so, etc). Without re-posting the email, this came up with Tephra Steampunk Roleplaying Game Playing Guide. Noble Knight was selling a used hardcover copy for $50, but you could buy a new hardcover copy + PDF directly from Cracked Monocle for $40. This was back in 2016 and now you can only get softcover + PDF ($24.99) from the publisher. Noble Knight's price for the NM- hardcover has come down since then as well ($39.60).

One benefit used to be that when you were looking to sell games they offered fair, guaranteed prices and quick transactions rather than trying to sell via eBay and hoping for the best. That has changed, with them significantly lowballing people looking to sell collections. I was offered $345 + shipping in credit, or $270 + shipping in cash for 5 moving boxes full of games and accessories (111 items). I checked the prices on their site to see what they would be selling the books for and it came to over $3500. (EDIT: corrected price, 3500 not 4500)

I understand markup and warehousing and that just because the book is listed doesn't mean it's going to sell, especially for the price they are asking, but it's insulting. I turned to eBay myself and lucked out, selling less than the contents of one box for over $500.

Yes, I didn't think about that. It is an obvious solution buying directly from the publisher. Thanks.

How about the PoD from drivethrurpg? How is the quality? Anybody knows?

I've had a wide variety of PoDs from DTRPG (softcovers, hardcovers, a variety of sizes) and always been happy with the results.
