I visited the cardiologist today. There was a general agreement that I've made progress since I was hospitalized in September. There was also an agreement that I hadn't made as much progress as I should have.

My lovely wife decided to tell the doctor she didn't approve of my snack choices, which promptly got me some new orders: NO! Snacks, just breakfast and either lunch or dinner but not both. Several pointed (and by that I mean he used his finger) references to my gut followed.

He wants me to drop 20 pounds and return on January 21 to discuss my progress again. I'm not sure there could be anything less fun than being told do diet the week of Thanksgiving and through the holidays.

So for now, disability continues.

And congrats on the progress you have made. It's not easy.

I had to chuckle about your wife. I've been there. Maybe we should form a "My SO threw me under the bus but had good intentions" guild?

She later said, "I'm sorry about the snacks but at least I didn't tell him you had pizza the other day".

Guess whose idea it was to have pizza for dinner?

It's time for her to find

somewhere unexpected. Maybe her car.

You can do this! I am also on a doctor-suggested weight loss progress right now (one of my meds has increased appetite as a very common side effect and I was told about it and warned not to let it lead to weight gain. Huh. Yeah. That did not work. I perhaps unsurprisingly gained weight to my already overweight total).
But I've been committing to this seriously for about 10 weeks now and I've lost about 8kg, and seeing that happen has bee really motivating.
If you ever want to message me to chat about it, feel free.

Congrats on the progress you made, Steve, and good luck moving forward!

Changing your eating habits has a surprisingly high challenge rating, and so far I've always had to many mali (malus points? how do you say it in English) pile up on my roll. So far I haven't been as successful as I wish I were. But you're a higher-level character, and I'm rooting for you. Here's a helping action roll: 1d6+3 = (5) + 3 = 8

Just remember, its not like you can't have anything, you just should not go back for 2nds. 1 plate with tiny portions of everything and you get to taste it all! It could be worse, you could be forced to an all liquid diet and really miss out.

Go go, he's not blue, he's sdonohue! (Which should totally be a color.)

I spoke with a nutritionist today. As most of us would have guessed, she didn't find much value in the doctor's advice on how to lose weight.

Hmm ... this is scientifically incorrect, pure and simple.

From the website of the Institut de Cardiologie de Montréal (Montreal Institute of Cardiology):

"There is a consensus that a diet based primarily on the consumption of plant-based foods (fruits, vegetables, legumes, seeds and nuts) combined with a reduced intake of red meats, deli meats and products containing added sugars and / or refined flours represents the optimal combination for maintaining a normal body weight and preventing chronic diseases, especially cardiovascular diseases.

The Mediterranean Diet or its close cousin, Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH), are concrete examples of dietary patterns that focus on these beneficial foods and that make the most of the abundance and the diversity of fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the year to not only broaden our culinary horizons, but also live a long and healthy life."

At this point, you might want to consider getting a "second opinion", just to make sure.

What does any of that have to do with cutting out snacks, and skipping a meal? Mediterranean or DASH-style diets are compatible with those choices, because those diets are about the source of calories, not the amount.

If a person needs to shed pounds for health reasons, then eliminating snacks and cutting out calories — in the context of an otherwise healthy diet — is perfectly reasonable advice.

As a long-time vegan, I of course would love to see more people eliminate animal food products from their diets (as well as junk calories from plant foods) but that alone may not cut it for all people.

Thanks Bruce. I like it too.

As for dieting, reducing to two meals a day is not advice I'd ever been given before. Most often, I hear that I should eat more small meals, which is what I've been doing for the last week.

When I weighed in last Tuesday I was down 9 pounds from my weight the previous week (which is what I gave the doctor on Monday). Today I was down 3 lbs from last Tuesday.

So I'm down about 12 lbs from when he told me to lose 20. Not going to stop now.
