HEY NERDS!

Missed me? Probably not. Except for Monster Mike, he's always liked me for some reason that I really appreciate but find odd since I'm a bit of a trash fire.

ANYWAY.

I got a hankering. Something jumped into my brain and I'm thinking I'm gonna maybe try doing this RPG thing again.

What's hot these days? What's not?

I'm a fan of minimalistish systems (I really loved Savage Worlds, didn't grok FATE, d20 is too much, blah blah blah).

I usually lean towards not swords and sorcery, more of an urban fantasy, sci-fi kinda guy.

What have I missed all these years?

5th edition is hot, everything else is not probably sums it up best. Not a good period in RPG publishing, but you never know what's around the corner ...

Welcome back!

Well heya stranger, hope you've been well.

Monster of the Week or Urban Shadows, or really anything "Powered by the Apocalypse". Hits a nice middle ground of narrative with a bit of crunch.

Savage Worlds is still a thing, y'know!

Well, it seems like it's Legacy of Dragonholt or nothing these days. But as a minimalist that should be up your alley as it's barely even a roleplaying game under the broadest definitions of such devil

There's a new edition of Savage Worlds coming out soon-ish. As a big fan of the current version, I'm neutral on the issue of a new version.

Oh gawd.

Games from the Swedish publisher Fria Ligan are hot, IMO. You have Tales from the Loop (think Stranger Things), Mutant Year Zero (post-apoc), Coriolis: The Third Horizon ("hard" sci-fi), and the recently released Forbidden Lands (fantasy).

I'm old enough to remember "Hey, nerd!" being the preface to a beating.

Hot games -
overall, D&D 5e is the hottest game worldwide. Not atypical for D&D, and a recovery from the depressing dip during 4th ed
Pathfinder is hot, too. I'd estimate it's about half as popular as D&D at the moment - the days of Pathfinder outselling D&D ended when D&D 5 launched. Still, it's close enough to D&D that many players can cross between D&D 3 and PF1 fairly freely. D&D5E and PF 2E less so, but the setting tropes remain the same.

FFG Star Wars is huge - top of the second tier.
Starfinder (Pathfinder in space) is pretty good selling, too.

Legend of the Five Rings 5th ed just launched. My FLGS had to reorder already, which is unusual. I'm enjoying the hell out of it.

Star Trek Adventures is very pretty, and good enough for play. It's not great (2d20 has some minor issues that my hard-charging players ran smack into; they're inherent in the system.)

There's a new edition of WFRP - it's fairly close to 1E mechanically, but with some 2E elements.

I've been advised by the author that I have not touted Knights & Legends nearly enough. So, go check that out. Fer sure, fer sure.

Me too. The worst beatings were the ones I gave myself.

Pretty much can't support the FFG Star Wars or L5R product for one reason or another *cough*GMS*cough*

5e is very hot. Not as sturdy as the 3rd, in my opinion, but solves many of the old problems and keeps many of the good things the team did over the years.

Wait. Don't get me started, dammit!

To be a nerd. What a badge of honor. We love what we do, we have passion.

And now we control EVERYTHING.

I see someone mentioned Star Trek Adventures. My heart spiked a beat. I'm happy now that I know I'm not the only one who digs that one.

I wish I could whore myself out for offering bad advice on game systems. I'd be a natural at that. Alas, I can't find anybody willing to pay me for it. So I'm more like a plain old skanky opiner. I think the urban dictionary must have a better word for it?

D&D 5th Edition is hot but so is Pathfinder. They have similar rules but I think that D&D 5th Edition is a little bit better. I've played both and my group prefers D&D over Pathfinder.

I mean, not to toot my horn, but its like I stopped playing RPGs and then there was only D&D left. Clearly *I* was the source of the boom.
