Let's make a hexcrawl together. Here's how this is gonna work. First, look at the hex map on the right and then pick one or more hexes you want to develop. Reply to this thread and "claim" the hex(es) - first claim gets it. If you need your hex changed on the map (change in terrain, addition of an icon, or other simple things) then let me know and I'll revise it.

Try to keep your hex in Ye Olde Fantasy standard genre (unless you absolutely just can't do that). Be system neutral as much as you can, so anybody can use it with whatever system they use. And don't step on intellectual property rights so we can share it around without a problem.

Keep in mind it's going to be somewhat random as a region so as a basic operating assumption lets assume that the closer you get to the city hex the safer you are - in the loose sense of the old Gygaxian parlance, city inhabitants are on team Lawful; distant inhabitants are on team Chaotic.

We also need somebody to claim/develop these thingies:

1. The Introduction (including brief regional history)
2. Regional Events (encounters/events/weather)
3. Somebody please come up with a cool name for the thing
4. Somebody please make a microbadge for the event (!)
5. Somebody please make an awesome cover for the PDF
6. Something (whatever else I'm forgetting that you want to add)

Here is the Wiki Page
RPGG_Build_a_Hexcrawl_Together

Let's assume that each hex is abt. 10 miles (that's the "realm" suggestion from D&D5).

Let's be done with all the entries by March 8. Any unclaimed hex stays empty/undefined/unknown.

The idea for a hexcrawl is taken from a comment made by Azukail on a QotD from a few days back.

A suggestion. Have some things in some hexes that could be tied to things in other hexes. Admittedly, this will perhaps take a bit of collaboration between two people. For example, a hidden key in one hex could unlock something in another.

I'll probably claim a hex at some point as well. Just need to decide where!

You can also do this by claiming two (or more) hexes. I figure with 100 hexes, we'll have enough for everybody.

Jackasses? You let a whole column get stalled and strafed on account of a couple of jackasses? What the hell's the matter with you?

May I please have 07.00?

It's a small farming village outlying the main town. Normally peaceful, and it depends on the city for defense. However, it's right on the border of those mountains and things slip down out of the mountains from time-to-time to hassle the residents.

Does that work?

What's the character of the city? Is someone developing that location?

I think I'd like to do 05.01, but am I correct in assuming that it includes the harbour outside the adjacent city, as well as the water area? That's my best guess as to what the anchor represents.

Also, what's the scale here? 1 hex = ?? miles/km, etc. That may affect things like description and the size and variance of random charts.

I'd suggest keeping the scale a bit loose. 24 miles per hex is pretty standard, but if it's moderately variable, people can drop the place in almost anywhere.

A good question. I don't want to be the one to tackle it, but since I'm on an adjacent hex, I'll definitely want to have a sense of it before finalizing mine.

If the scale will be 24 miles to a hex then if any one wants 08.07 and/or 09.06 let me know.

I think one hex would be plenty.

Hey Clark, put me down for 06.03 and 04.06. I don't think anyone has claimed those yet. Also, I'd be happy to contribute to the Introduction nearer the end of the process but won't "claim" it in any fashion.

As to overall name, I suggest there are two ways to go:

Name early - come up with an evocative name for the region as soon as possible, this can then inspire the work people do with the hexes

Name late - come up with the name near the very end, as a way to tie together all the hexes.

I can see it either way.

1 hex = 10 miles

That's the suggested "realm" size from D&D5, so we'll use that.

THIS!

I suggest the following as a modification of process, break the procedure down into two "passes":

FIRST PASS: everyone creates their own hex worth of stuff as they see fit, whatever seems cool. Put that stuff in the wiki.

SECOND PASS: once that is done, everyone goes back over their own hexes, but this time they make sure to include the following:
* at least one element from someone else's description of an adjacent hex
* at least one element from someone else's description of a distant hex.

What do you all think?

That'll depend on who claims it and what they make it, I guess. If nobody claims it (unlikely) then it's going to be "Generic City".
