THIS!

I suggest the following as a modification of process, break the procedure down into two "passes":

FIRST PASS: everyone creates their own hex worth of stuff as they see fit, whatever seems cool. Put that stuff in the wiki.

SECOND PASS: once that is done, everyone goes back over their own hexes, but this time they make sure to include the following:
* at least one element from someone else's description of an adjacent hex
* at least one element from someone else's description of a distant hex.

What do you all think?

I like it. One thing I like from such as Hex Crawl Chronicles is interconnections of hexes.

That'll depend on who claims it and what they make it, I guess. If nobody claims it (unlikely) then it's going to be "Generic City".

You could have generic city, to later become "Let's build a city together".

That's the suggested "realm" size from D&D5, so we'll use that.

I was thinking something like that, too. But, now... it's your hex Do whatever you want to it.

As a follow-up suggestion, I think as part of the 2nd pass we should all consider a note on each of the six borders of our hexes, reflecting anything notable about passing from our region to the adjacent region.

Jackasses? You let a whole column get stalled and strafed on account of a couple of jackasses? What the hell's the matter with you?

You're leading this project, Clark. Why don't you take it?

Also: Might I humbly suggest that Clark serve as the arbiter of what is and isn't in-character for the hexcrawl? If there are conflicts between what different designers want, then Clark ought to arbitrate fairly between them.

A point on the character of the city: If we're talking 1 hex is ten miles across, then that city can't be that big. It's probably an outlying city on the edge of a wilderness, and can't be more than about 5000-10,000 permanent inhabitants.

Nah. It's more than enough work to put together the final PDF and keep the thread/map/wiki edited and going on. I might grab a minor hex late in the game. But somebody else can do the city.

I'm fine with "Ye Olde Fantasy" feel, overall. If somebody's hex turns out gonzo, that's OK too. It's not like it'll be the first Medieval world with a spaceport and a hellgate within a few miles of each other

Easy enough to fudge a bit, no? The city is only part of the hex, and various roads and outlying settlements make up the rest (for example). It's clearly a port town, so it might also be bigger than we suspect.

Collaboration is good, and I'm sure many will do that anyway. But mandating it might be a bit much, especially with transitions between all adjacent hexes. I think suggesting it is good, though.

Endzeitgeist's description as "elegant two-column b/w-standard" (for Raging Swan) sounds better!

If you're pushed for time, I can probably help.

I'll take 06.07 and 07.07. For some reason I have the "Teddy Bears' Picnic" song stuck in my head, and need to get it out creatively. Expect something goofy.

I can shift to 01.01 if needed; I was after a water hex.

Oops, sorry! I will stick with those two...time/space permitting, perhaps I'll claim another water hex later.

I'm intrigued to participate in this, but I'm honestly not too clear on what a hexcrawl actually entails (in terms of writing and presentation). Is there a platonic example of a hexcrawl I can look at for reference?

Bad Myrmidon is available for free from RPGNow. Although the tone of that one might not want to be emulated.

EDIT: Oh, and there's The Northern Tier which is also free. I like that one.

I was thinking that I'd just write up an encounter location for the hex. However, is there a format you'd like us to conform to? And do you want the information here on the thread, or should we plant it straight in the wiki?

I could see it both ways in terms of style. Uniform format makes it more readable, but non-uniform makes it more interesting in terms of variety of styles used. It's also easier for Clark. Getting 20+ people to prep in the same format would be like herding cats, I'm guessing. Given the community nature of this, I'd lean toward the "anything goes" approach to format. I may also check out the Northern Tier pdf mentioned above to conform to something resembling an accepted format, but I think it would be pretty hard to do this "wrong."
