I'm not sure .... I'm thinking nomad halflings in the vale and more civilized halflings on a settlement by the shore. How do you see halflings?

I do not DD5. Is 10 mile hex 85 square miles or a 3.5 mile hex = 10 square miles?

I guess I have always called a 6 mile hex ~ 25 (23) square miles.

Cause that's a insane river. Baltimore would fit in about 1 10 mile hex.

Yes...

But remember that an individual hex doesn't show you all of the details of the entire hex. Instead, It shows you the most predominant, common, or obvious type of terrain to be found there, NOT the ONLY terrain to be found there.

Agricultural community with dwarves and gnomes in the hills and mountains, kind of an economic triangle, no aloof elves.

I can't remember off the top of my head how to calculate the area of a hexagon but the standard way of measuring a hex used to be from face to face. So a 10 mile hex would not be 10 square miles.

Then it is ~85 square miles. We measure by the short diagonal. The long diagonal is ~11miles. The map is about the size of Massachusetts. Each hex can support several major predators, etc etc.

Odds and Ends:

1.) I found this list of online hexcrawling resources while google-hopping that might come in handy. (One of my favorite things about RPGers is that they will spend so much time and creative energy on something that only, like, 4 people will ever seek out... and those 4 people will probably steal it for their own anyway).

2.) I'm in 02.02 and will actively be looking to make connections to other hexes (most likely via a rumors table in the village/inn(s) I'll be doing), so please reach out if you want something in there. Speaking of which...

3.) Is there any easy way to do tables for this?

Gotta say y'all, this has already been an educational experience. I want to create a full hex-crawl adventure at some point, and the research rabbit holes I'm going down for this project are very helpful. thanks for all the links and such.

My "eyeballed" count is ~56 hexes accounted for, though I'm not keeping rigid track. But I think we're doing pretty well here. I was hoping we'd hit 60 by the end. {edit} ok, I think I was a bit high. We're right about half full. Still, good progress.

Now we just need someone to gird their loins and take 06.01. I am fully prepared to work with you on the adjacent harbor, but I will not be taking it myself.

Clark, I think you may have missed Carlc from page 4. He wanted two random hexes.

How about putting The Breached Fortress of Anoros on the map somewhere if possible?

Here's my suggestion. Clark or others, see what you think. We wait until we're at the deadline to claim and prep hexes. Then, if there's a "dead zone" somewhere that makes sense, we insert the Fortress.

I don't necessarily think we need a dungeon of this complexity - we're probably looking at a 75-page (or more) PDF as-is - but it might also make for a cool crossover, and will give our hex crawl a proper dungeon.

While I'm sitting here stewing over my D&D session tomorrow, might as well triple-post. My thoughts on my hexes below. I'm open to suggestions for revisions or additions:

05.01 City Harbour

Functional and large harbour, with a natural breakwater about 1/2 mile out. Along the docks, the point of interest is an exclusive restaurant that's a permanently docked ship in disrepair. But it caters to the more wealthy, as there's a limit to the number of people that can board before it starts taking on water. Proprietors choose not to repair it, as they can charge obscene amounts for a table there. Will also have a minor events random table for the area.

The breakwater has a lighthouse built onto it to direct ships in bad weather, and the old sea dog running it has informants and spies throughout the city. The basement of the lighthouse acts as a storehouse for black market goods being smuggled in and out. Those coming or going via ship may be contacted about potential opportunities.

Other additions would be specific to the not-yet-developed city.

06.07 Grizzly Bears Picnic

Faint music throughout and strange behavior in the local wildlife. Chance of encountering one of several "human" acts performed by animals, including song and dance. Also chance of a fight if players interrupt said acts. Source is an enchanted pool that seems to flow from 07.07 (see below). Random shenanigans if they drink from it.

07.07 Falls of the Forgotten Muse

Sharp cliff 100's of feet high up against 08.07, with a 500+ foot waterfall cascading off it. Song seems to emanate from the falls. It flows throughout the area, and into the pool in 06.07. Behind falls is a cave with a shrine to a forgotten minor deity/muse. Possible boon or curse depending on interaction.

If I were to include a small dungeon, this is also where it would be.

...

Those are sketches only. Full versions will be more fleshed out.

This may be more work than we are willing to do, but I always organize my hexcrawl in a spread sheet. You can essentially fit infinite information in a cell and this lets you track your junk 2D instead of in a long list. I have used hyperlinks in the past but usually just a short description is enough.

I like the idea. I only have one concern... Are all of the individual images in the hexes open source or creative commons usable? I don't want our cover to violate anyone's copyright.

Love the cover, Patrick, pending response to Sam's copyright concerns. Think it works great otherwise.

Also, I'm retaining the right to incorporate any strange animals (see: giant ants) into my Grizzly Bear Picnic hex, unless otherwise instructed. It shouldn't affect anyone else's plans; but the weirder, the better for my 06.07 hex.

Lol, yeah, really. I get it, though. There's a weight that comes with that hex, since a lot of other things will be affected by its tone. I say Clark should have it, but he seems content to coordinate.

While we're coordinating, I'd be much obliged if you had a large stream or small river flowing into 07.07 from your 08.07, per the above description of a waterfall. Doesn't need to play a big role, but it will create some continuity between hexes.
