Is there some ingredient for RPG sessions that is of particular value to you? Something you would sorely miss if it lacked?
Anything in the shared narrative (e.g. combat or in-character banter), in the game rules (having a GM, rolling several dice at once), or at the table (quoting Monty Python, or having certain snacks)...?

Do you have a question you want asked as QOTD? Post here!

And if you want to find an old QOTD: The big QOTD Summary and Subscription Thread Volume 3

I think there is an overarching feeling that I get when I play RPGs - but I think that most of the feeling is brought by the people and is relatively hard to pin down because it depends on people.

So that is sort of a non-answer...

I will say that when I ran Numenera it was hard for me to get used to the fact that the GM rolls no dice whatsoever. It DID bother me, but it DIDN'T make it feel like less of an RPG, or make me feel like I wasn't playing/running/participating in an RPG.

For all RPGs:

In-character banter. I love it. I love it when it is between two character, between NPCs and characters... in those really rare cases between two NPCs. I live for good back-and-forth conversation/salvo/verbal battle of wits.

World building! I can't get enough of it! Preferably shared world building where we all have a say in the world we're traveling through.

For solo RPGs:

It's all about exploration. I want good maps, or better yet to fill-in/build my map as I go along, I also appreciate lots of lovely random tables to consult as I build the story of my character going out across the world.

* A good GM.
* A tense mission.
* Dice that require minimum interpretation to understand the result.
* A system that doesn't require rule look-ups or otherwise pull me out of character.
* And of course, a group that respects everyone at the table, though that should go without saying.

In moderation though. Its bad when players are trying to recall what happened during the previous session due to excessive Jager :gulp:

Miniatures and a small grid are a must as well.

Heh, I've learned through hard lessons that if I need the lowest center of gravity drinking vessels possible while role-playing. Keep your fancy thin stem wine glasses in the cupboard, I need a juice tumbler with the thickest glass base you have or wine is going everywhere before the end of the night.

In answer to the question, laughter.

But without Rules it just becomes story-telling and no longer a game. I play for the game as much as the Role-play.
