Makes sense for Adams.

Yedlin a winger? I don't see it at this point, but okay.

I think Yedlin has been playing (at least some) as a winger for Newcastle. Though in the lineup I saw it was a back 3, so probably more like a right back than Berhalter's system. Yedlin's actual defense has always been pretty suspect, so it doesn't seem crazy to me.

This seems an ideal role for Adams, though.

Yeah, I didn't do a good job explaining my thoughts there.

Yedlin just hasn't shown me much in the final third. He can terrify teams getting it there, but then nothing.

Maybe I'm too resistant here. It's probably worth a look.

That's fair. Yedlin's primary strength is his speed...he seems to cross a lot but not have the creativity to be effective.

There's a nice article on Adams' role as the right back and how it might work well for him:

https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2019/03/19/warshaw-move-right...

Also, Kreis and the U-23s...I started following MLS after Kreis had peaked (apparently). I hope he's up to qualifying for the Olympics! Seems like it ought to be a strong team.

When I first got back into MLS, I really enjoyed watching RSL. I thought the move to NYCFC made sense, but I was gutted for him that first year. That roster was a mess, and I thought his firing was unfair. Then, I'm not sure why anyone would have taken the Orlando job.

On the other hand, Lagerwey built the RSL roster, and it's not like Schmetzer does a ton of coaching in Seattle. Patrick Vieira turned around NYCFC with a couple of tweaks.

This is make or break for him, and I don't think I would have given him the opportunity. Fingers crossed though!

Here's the most realistic starting XI I've seen posted for tonight:

I wouldn't be surprised if it's Johnson instead of Horvath tonight (I think they'll split the two games).

Can't wait. It almost feels like a real game.

Matt Doyle has a great article here about the current squad.

I really like how the roles are broken down. For the first time, I'm grokking why Yedlin fits as a winger in this system WAY better than I thought.

Doyle's article is really good. I love his stuff, he actually explains the tactics and success...for someone like me who doesn't get that immediately, it's super-helpful.

I'm looking forward to the game tonight, it's going to be great to see those guys back in action!

So... okay.

I'm not going to say much until Chile. I thought things looked rough around the edges. US was the better team, but... I liked Trapp, Long, and Arriola (kinda).

McKennie's challenge was dumb. I hope he's okay.

Let's see it again Tuesday.

Yeah, weird game. I guess good practice for CONCACAF? I agree Trapp and Long looked good; Brooks too, though it seemed he had less work to do. I think I like the overall system and the energy the players gave. Up front, I was not convinced by Pulisic centrally. But I'm also not going to pass judgment so early into the experiment!

McKennie's injury was crazy, but so was going for that ball.

Fluke goal or not, defensive block or not, it's nice to see a win against a fairly competent team.

My wife won the first battle of the McGeorges, and she did it with FCC players.

Brad Friedel shouldn't have a job one way or the other after this game. That was just awful.

Ruptured ankle ligament. soblue

I'd like to see Lletget get a look in the McKennie role against Chile.

"Interesting" lineup...

Zardes
Arriola Pulisic Baird
Roldan
Bradley
Ream Omar Miazga Yedlin
Horvath

I'm relatively okay with everything. Sure, I'd rather see Ramirez than Zardes, Lletget over Roldan, but okay.

Omar? I'm not sure about that. Is Yedlin going to play the Lima/Adams role? Eh...

Eh...

I was VERY happy with Bradley. It seems crazy, but I swear having the Captain's armband screwed him on the field. He's been great without it.

I was happy with Berhalter's 2nd half tactical changes. They were just getting overrun and couldn't get (or keep) the ball. It was better after Lovitz came in for Baird.

Hopefully Pulisic is okay. Nice goal.

Zardes had some nice moments.

It was just too sloppy. The passing needed to be crisper. With Yedlin and Omar at the right defense, I had flashbacks to the Klinsmann era defending.

This was a great reality check. The Gold Cup will be interesting.

It was an...interesting game.

That opening goal was great - I've been really impressed by Zardes lately. Not like he's the second coming or anything, but he's made up a lot of ground in his weaknesses. I no longer dread seeing his name in the lineup.

Pulisic's injury is so frustrating. So many this year, why? Let's hope it really was precautionary and he's back with BVB this weekend.

The game really seemed to change when he went out...without his threat, the Chile press seemed to work a lot better. Once Trapp and Lovitz came on, the US settled down. Hopefully that means Berhalter is learning the personnel and what they are capable of.

I do like how Berhalter adjusted the tactics during the game to compensate for weaknesses. I like systems, but I don't like dogma.

Anyway, 1-1 against Chile - a Chile that was pushing pretty hard - is nothing to sneeze at. It would feel quite good, if only Mexico hadn't beaten them 3-1 a few days before. (Though, from what I've heard, that was a bit fluky.)

Yes! I should have mentioned that. It can also be argued that the USMNT had a 'B' team on the field. I'd only be willing to call Pulisic, Arriola, and Bradley "starters."

Now we wait for June. Let's hope the pool gets some quality playing time before then.

I'm sure if you offered FCC 7 points after 5 games they would have taken that deal every single time.

But...

For the second straight game, Koch played a defensive midfielder (this time Allan Cruz) as the right winger. It just kills the offense.

This is driving me nuts. Against New England, they went with Lamah-Manneh-Saief and looked good. Then against Philadelphia at home Saief goes to the bench and Cruz (a good player, but no winger) starts. No explanation.

Then down 0-2, they bring on Saief... for Manneh. gulp

Next, Stanko for Ulloa. DM for DM.

They didn't get four attackers on the field until the 76th minute when Amaya debuted replacing Cruz.

I think Koch is bananas.

So, our "Bye" team - JHM United - is my buddy JoMo's team. He called me this week to apologize about not putting in a lineup.

Silly me, I thought that meant he was going to start doing that! laugh

At the end of the FC Cincinnati v. SKC game, FCC had five defensive midfielders on the field: Bertone, Ulloa, Cruz, Alexander, Stanko.

I am willing to concede somewhat on Cruz. He may be more of an 8 (which FCC doesn't use). He's been playing right winger which drives me nuts, but he's a very good player and is doing okay there.

FCC also is having injury (and other) issues with attackers. Lamah came out during the game, Manneh was hurt right at the end, Saief is not fit (gassed early in the second half), and Adi is dealing with his poor life decision. Koch left Amaya on the bench, so it appears they don't trust him with a game on the line.

Thanks for the reminder!

It is so strange to me that Portland and Atlanta are so bad this year. I mean, getting hammered by San Jose? After that LAFC game the previous week? I guess it's possible LAFC is head and shoulders above the rest of the league, especially given the DC result last week. Whoo!

I'm interested to see how FCC plays LAFC this weekend. Maybe all those d-mids are going to bunker up....
