Bluntly, one can develop a superiority complex over people in "lower class" jobs, and learning to say, "Please," acts as a constant reminder that the person who is serving you is a person, and due the respect that any person should receive.

This is certainly true, although I usually characterize the service side of it in the Kantian mode of using others as a means rather than as ends unto themselves. This may be a potato/patatoh distinction.

My favorite standalone magic word is probable "Baozakerga!," from Zatch Bell!

My favorite magic phrase which is entirely composed of magic words is probably "Azarath Metrion Zinthos," from Teen Titans.

My favorite magic phrases composed mostly of real words are probably a tie between:
"By the power of power of Grayskull, I have the Power!" from He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.
and
"Thunder!! Thunder!!! Thunder!!!! ThunderCats! Ho!!!!! Sword of Omens, give me power beyond power! Ho!!!!!," from ThunderCats.

It's maybe not my favorite but definitely the first one that popped into my head. Maybe not what you're referring to but when you say magic word...

Must be a generational thing. Although I read the HP books, I see them as children’s books. Not ‘serious’ fantasy at all. ;-)

avada kedavra worth a mention. Dunno if it was intended, but I think it is smart how it sounds like abrakadabra. As though this spell was so infamous in the wizarding world, that it bled into the muggle culture, and now thouasands of children's party magicians are unknowingly almost saying killing curses

Of course that’s not a coincidence! Is there anything that JKR didn’t ‘borrow’ from predecessors? ;-)

My wife is a very orthodox Catholic, and I don't get this joke.

Unless it's a reference to how many kids we have, in which case I totally get this joke. Live it, even. (When I tell people that we have five kids I usually have to say, "Catholic, not Mormon. Tell the right jokes.")

Bingo games are a common activity/fundraiser at many local Catholic parishes (or at least it is here in the Midwest). (Source: 12 years of Catholic school.)

Maybe it’s more a Michigan thing but here in Michigan many Catholic Churches make money with Bingo games.

Jackasses? You let a whole column get stalled and strafed on account of a couple of jackasses? What the hell's the matter with you?

Ah, yeah. I think that's a church-in-general thing. I stay away from the bingo games. Nothing is more calculated to inspire mind-numbing boredom. It's not even social! You have to be quiet so you can pay attention to your board(s)!

Since "please" and "mellon" and "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh…" have all been claimed already, and since we're okay with phrases, I might have to go for the portion of the Ring-inscription that we get in the original Black Speech:
Quote:
Ash nazg durbatulûk
Ash nazg gimbatul
Ash nazg thrakatulûk
agh burzum-ishi krimpatul

So many of my favorites have been covered in this thread!

Though honestly, if I'm using a magic user in an RPG, I prefer to create my own magic words!
