Quote from the Planet Mongoose blog
http://blog.mongoosepublishing.co.uk/index.php?blog=2&title=...:
Quote:
In other A Call to Arms news, I can now report that we did not manage to grab the licence we were chasing for the game - Star Wars. We weren't really expecting this one to happen (we made a sideways reference to it in the State of the Mongoose), but we got much further along than we thought we would.

The interesting thing is why our negotiations ended - another company beat us to it. We are not going to reveal who this is (you have heard of them), as that is their fanfare to blow. However, I am sure many will find it intriguing that the licence covers card games, RPGs, and... miniatures. Now, the company concerned is not known for its miniatures lines, which will probably put paid to my dream of 28mm multipart/multipose Stormtroopers.

Who do you think it is? Since it's not WOTC, who else has card, RP and mini's? My initial thought is Fantasy Flight, but any other thoughts?

It's got to be FFG, doesn't it?

I could see Paizo in a position to do this though. Actually, the second company that popped to mind was AEG, but I find that hard to believe.

Cubicle 7? They seem to be grabbing a ton of stuff. Eh...

Margaret Weis Productions does the license thing, but Star Wars seems way too big.

Maybe FFG.

But there are a reasonable number of companies under that description, probbly not all of them able to pay for the licence though...

The number of companies that could afford them and that we could be expected to have heard of is very small. I'd say it has to be either Steve Jackson or White Wolf. Both have done minis, card games, and RPGs in the past, although in the case of minis neither is particularly known for them.

I think that description explicitly rules out FFG, because FFG would have gone for the board game license first.

Damn. I was hoping Mongoose/Cubicle 7 would pickup the Star Wars license.

FFG would (could) make a good job of it, but that will be another expensive RPG line to collect.

Not sure who else has the clout to support the Star Wars brand, I'm sure it's not a cheap license. It will be interesting to find out who it is and what they will be doing.

Considering this is the era of cheap licenses...

Except if another manufacturer has the board game license and all they could get where the other ones...

Could it be WizKids ? They seem to have some sort of Star Trek license as well and are knows for their 'clix' minis.

Unlikely, because of this quote in the text: "Now, the company concerned is not known for its miniatures lines..."

I had also thought of WizKids (they have a history with Star Wars with their Pocket Model game) but they are best known for their mini's so I ruled them out.

I know next to nothing about White Wolf, but I get the impression it's someone not foreign to licenes. Not sure what they've done - but it's a possiblity.

Steve Jackson would be GURPS. Not sure about that one. Although he does have all that mad Munchkin money floating about.

I still say FFG, but who knows?

White Wolf Entertainment AB mostly publish their own lines of RPGs but they have indeed had some licences too (mostly published under their Sword & Sorcery Studios imprint):
World of Warcraft: The Roleplaying Game
EverQuest Role-Playing Game
Street Fighter: The Storytelling Game
As well as some Arcana Unearthed, Ravenloft and other d20 books.

See post above, White Wolf have said no.

And the plot thickens!

SJG or Cubicle 7?

Didn't the guys at Cubicle said they were looking onto a big licence?
(Or am I dreaming about reading it???)

At one point, Cubicle 7 and Mongoose were both part of the Rebellion Group, but never were the same company. I believe one or the other has now left the Rebellion Group.
