I'm flexible as far as posting frequency. I tend to post quite a bit, both as a GM and player.
My goal for playing is to gain practical experience with the system so that I, in turn, may GM an Eclipse Phase game; part of my desire to learn as many systems as I can.

I have two concepts: and idle-rich celebrity has-been type; a refugee from an illicit Jovian plantation.

I would like to accomplish two things with this thread. First and foremost, I would be glad to assist anyone with queries into the character generation process. If you would like, we could set up a time to do it via chat if you would like more guidance. One of the standard criticisms of the system is the sheer amount of information and choices dumped on the player, and I would agree it is a very steep learning curve.

Being as we live in the same town, I would not mind walking through character creation while having a drink. I read through the mechanics portion of the quick-start rules and skimmed character creation. I am currently halfway through a read of the setting. That will probably help me more than trying to grind through the nuts-and-bolts portion.

I hope to have a fairly good concept for a character by the time I am through the setting chapter, which hopefully I can build with the character creation. I have a couple of vague outlines right now, but I want to read through the rest of the setting before firming them up.

However, I would also like you to write a brief statement about things like your play style, what you want from this game, anything you absolutely want to avoid, etc. Also, it would be peachy keen if you could post what sort of timetable would work best for you. I am very flexible, being an unemployed college student.

I am generally of the "poke things and see what it does" style of playing. As long as whatever is happening makes logical sense (within its own rules, of course), I will be probably enjoy it.

I am not really sure what I "want" from the game, but I found the setting interesting and that has been backed up by the rulebook. I trust that you be able to guide/tell an engaging story. Not that I think it will happen, but I absolutely do not want to play through something that feels like opposed die rolls. Basically, I just want to have fun with it.

I will post as frequently as I can, probably a bit slower turnaround on the weekends. At the very least, I should be able to post a few times a day.

In series:

A) When one of our game group brought up EP, I quickly jumped on it and read the rules plus several of the underlying authors/inspirations. We had a few very good sessions IRL but then moved on to other systems. I think the game fluff is incredible but wonder if it was difficult to play at the table given the multiple lines of action/inquiry/forking that can be going on simultaneously. I'm interested in PbF because I think it can bring a new dimension to the story telling and I'm into it for the experience of playing the game.

B) As for posting schedule, I'm at a desk from 8ish-6ish central M-F and alternating between drafting and conference calls. Depending on the day, I can usually make multiple short posts but may not have focus for long posts during the day. At night I have more flexibility. Weekend days are hit/miss because I'm driving my kids around to various activities, but I can usually get time to post. Only time I will be slowed down is when I'm traveling for work and not connected, but those are short bursts and I will give you a heads up.

C) Character gen -- I've got a couple of different directions I can go: (i) Scientist specializing in morphs (a couple of degrees off the brinker genehacker in the core book) that is heavy on science; (ii) a socialite basejumper/prankster/popular x-caster...I've played both of those, but depending on skill mix we have, I could also move towards (iii) a criminal enforcer type (possibly a chimp uplift) with an obsession for pre-fall action movies.

I have the core book, so I'm sure I'll be able to get something together.

Playstyle.... Hard to answer. I like a strong narrative, where the player can contribute. I haven't played much PbF, so I guess I'm still finding my form.

I can manage a couple of posts a day. But I see I'm in a different time zoen than all of you...

I was thinking about playing a Venusian hyperelite. One of the super-rich, who is getting bored.

If that doesn't work, I could play a titanian socialist or something.

I have a question: you all seem to want to play some kind of super-wealthy person. As I am still working my way through the core book, is there any particular reason why this is a cool archetype?

Just curious...

At the moment I'm leaning toward the culture shocked refugee, but I considered the wealthy dude because it's not a archetype I've played before. I haven't been a dilettante yet.

Luck of the draw. It is a post-scarcity society. It is the personality that counts.

Lucas Marne
Lucas comes from a wealth French family of businessmen and entrepreneurs. His father, the late Armand Marne, was one of the first people to invest heavily in off-planet industry. Even though Armand's company has been absorbed into bigger companies, his endeavours placed his descendent into the core of both the hypercorporations and the solar system's glitterati.

Lucas followed his father into space during the first major colonization of Venus over 70 years ago. Since then he has travelled throughout the inner solar system, but Venus has always been considered his home. Lucas has never held a “real” job, but his adventuring has made him a keen and versatile operative. Lately he has been taking jobs for the Morningstar Constellation. While he doesn't care about many things, he does have a sense of loyalty to this group. Both because he has been here so long, and because his family was apart of its founding.

During the Fall Lucas was partying on Venus. His father was killed on Earth, but they hadn't spoken in several decades, so the Fall itself did little to impact Lucas' life.

On the outside, Lucas is a fun-loving member of the inner solar-system's rich and famous. On the inside Lucas is a more disturbing individual. He has lived for a long time now, and the world holds little interest for him. He is constantly chasing new experiences, and he feels best when doing what he calls “danger work”. “Danger work” is Lucas' challenges to himself. Breaking into places, stealing objects, erasing information, Lucas is always upping the ante to find something that will stimulate him. In addition to this, Lucas doesn't really care about anyone, and he has the notion that any problems a person has, they can blame on themselves.

I wasn't thinking in terms of money, more in terms of fun and connections. If I go scientist, his wealth is "knowledge" and "grey market" connections (to the rich and criminals) to build them designer morphs. If I go x-caster, I wasn't viewing him as rich but more of a prankster, pretty boy, partier actor (think Brad Pitt or Ashton Kutcher pre-Angelina/Jennifer/Demi) with a high party rep and lots of swagger.

TS, any thoughts of what range you want strong skills to be in, particularly the attack and fray skills? For instance, for a combat friendly character, would weapons and fray in the range of 55-65 be about right? Too high or too low?

Much appreciated. I'm planning on it. I've been trying to read upon the loading of avatars and then figure out what I'm loading. I will probably need to hassle one of my graphic designer friends to crop an avatar down for me....whistle

UPDATE: Okay, so that was easier than I thought to put something up for now. Thanks again.

Right now I am thinking an infomorphic-leaning exhuman, possibly having been at one time a worker for Experia or Exotech. Those hypercorps seem the most accepting of AI, so would probably be okay with informorhs.

Would that be reasonable to fit in with everyone else? I think my skill set would be different enough to mesh well.

Stealing Karl's format:

penguin.5 was granted awareness by Morgan Sterling in an attempt to boost the effectiveness of his pet project security suite "Penguin". After initial tests proved successful, the program seemed to be outperforming expectations and was allowed to operate in the live programming environment.

Six months after awareness, the program was granted a large amount of autonomy in order to continue its security monitoring. The idea was to have penguin.5 be freed to pursue its own investigations of any cyberactivity it found suspicious. With only limited oversight from a transhuman, it was expected that it could more rapidly analyze information and pursue its investigations.

The increased autonomy allowed it to test Exotech security at various levels by attempting to crack the systems that it had installed using convential hacking techniques. This led to exceptional programming capabilities as penguin.5 attempted to learn new and inventive ways to tear its work down.

Due to its origin, penguin.5 has a strong loyalty to Morgan Sterling and Exotech, and also supports the entire concept of HyperCorps. After all, anything that could create such an excellent security program such as itself would be inherently beneficial to society. penguin.5 also harbors a deep dislike of bioconservatives, not only due to its core programming, but because it feels it is a threat to Exotech's goals and its continued existence. penguin.5 is focused on improving itself to better perform its tasks and to allow Exotech to continue its work on AI's possibly leading to singularity.

Grodd's first memory is fighting duels for a small-time Martian gang. He was the gang's only claim to cred, the Uplifted Chimp with the bad attitude. he was raised on a steady diet of pre-Fall entertainment and bad food. After watching Deep Blue Sea and rooting for the sharks, he decided he could be free. Fighting some snitches sleeved into a pack of wounded hyenas, Grodd accidentally threw two of the beasts into the crowd. During the ensuing chaos, Grodd escaped, sought out the members of "his" gang and killed them all, taking their credits as his payment and destroying their stacks. Grodd fought two more matches, betting all the credits on himself and then used the proceeds off planet. With his pit-made reputation, Grodd found work as muscle for hire for the Triads and others, gradually finding his way to Titan. Grodd spends his free time researching, reading and seeking to better himself mentally. He is desperate to figure out what a soul is, and whether an uplift can have one too. He is proud of his heritage, but wants absolute freedom from prejudice and respect for himself. While not a political animal or a true believer, he would like to see all uplifts get the same opportunities he wants for himself.
