I've had a great week, but it is now time to hand over to the next RPG Geek of the Week

You'd have to be hiding under a rock not to have noticed my successor's username on the front page lately, whether as part of the RPGG Newscaster team or attached to one of the very many reviews he produces. I think his approach to gaming is very different from mine, so I'm looking forward to seeing the answers he provides this week. Please give a warm welcome and plenty of questions to

Dankon Baby! Without Rhiannon I'd still be mining domars in the slag heaps of The Geek. My gratitude for ever.

My introduction to D&D was through The Game Preserve in Indianapolis when it was still on the hill in Broad Ripple. In retrospect I'm pretty sure my sister was just dragging me along while she bought pot. Being 9, I was pretty clueless. A copy of the Holmes boxed set, with chits! soon followed. My first character was called Kill or be Killed! We misunderstood the AC rules and I rolled a 19 for that stat. Boot Hill and Gamma World followed. I had a major affair with GURPS in my 20's however discontent soon set in and I sold all of my gaming material. That lasted about as long as it took for me to mail out the packages. I figure I've played about about 300 different RPG's, covering most of the styles. I loathe superhero and Narrative RPG's, find SciFi impossible to run, love Gamma World the best, and always return to Holmes. My new wife, The Pretty Girl, runs the Indianapolis gaming meetup. We play RPG's twice a week, on average, in four different games. I used to GM about 99% of games played however that number shifted dramatically to around 50% when we started dating. I understand that I can sometimes be a difficult player for a DM.

On the personal side of the house: after a degree in CompSci & Philosophy (Logic) I backpacked through Asia and Africa for a bit before settling down to the life of a middle class wage slave. I am now a closet academic and manage engineering and operations for about 5% of the Internet backbone. I have the attention span of a fruit fly and usually have about 5-6 major hobbies going at any one time.

And in grand tradition, here are his (quite enigmatic) two truths and a lie:
Poll: Bryce's two truths and a lie
Which of these is a lie?
Stunningly attractive, I have appeared as a stand-in for secret agents.
Full of ennui, I once turned off France.
Adventure called: I have bribed my way in to or out of six countries.

Poll created by regency_rhi

I'll kick things off with some questions:
d10-1 You write so many reviews for adventures and modules - what percentage have you played?
d10-2 What are some of these 5-6 hobbies you have going?
d10-3 What do you loathe about narrative RPGs?
d10-4 What do you use the geek for the most, and why?
d10-5 If you could 'convert' one person in your life into a gamer, who would it be?
d10-6 Favourite aspect of roleplaying? Of being a GM?
d10-7 Any game been so bad you regret wasting your money on it?
d10-8 Favourite web comics or blogs?

Congratulations, Bryce! Took you 2 years to get an Avatar (and not from lack of funds!) and in a couple weeks time you're geek of the week. Coincidence?! yeah, probably

Now... my usual questions with one leader:

d10-0 What the heck IS your avatar? I can only just make out some sort of line drawing... a magic user casting magic missile at something green?

d10-1 If you had to spend forever and a day on a remote island (well stocked with food, shelter, pencil, paper, dice and 3-5 friends) what one reading (non-game) book would you take with you and why?

d10-2 If you had to spend forever and a day on a remote island (well stocked with food, shelter, pencil, paper, dice and 3-5 friends) what one game (non RPG) would you take with you and why?

d10-3 If you could play an RPG with any one fellow RPG Geek regular, who would it be and why?

d10-4 If you could play an RPG with any famous person (dead or alive... but not an RPG Geek regular), who would it be and why?

d10-5 If you were trapped at a convention and dying to play but all they had were pre-1989 RPGs (i.e. before AD&D 2e), what specific RPG would you play?

d10-6 If you were trapped at a convention and dying to play but all they had were post-1989 RPGs (i.e. AD&D 2e and beyond), what specific RPG would you play?

d10-7 Which would you rather... (no waffling allowed)
d10-71d10-1 Hamburger or French-Fries
d10-71d10-2 Clean Air or Clean Water
d10-71d10-3 Dysfunctional Democracy or Benign Dictator
d10-71d10-4 Bagel or Toast
d10-71d10-5 Ginger or Mary-Ann
d10-71bacon Bacon or Double Bacon

Enjoy your week!

Tell me things about you:

1) Why no Avatar for so long?
2) Where do you find the time?
3) You can summon 4 figures from all of literature and history to your gaming table for an evening:

a) What colour is the tablecloth?
b) What snacks do you serve?
c) What game do you play?
d) Who are they?
e) What class/archetype does each play?
f) Who betrays the party?
g) Who scores the MVP XP?

Congrats Bryce!!!!

Some standard questions:

d10-1 The d4... what is it good for?

d10-2 Giant pile of dice, or just one set in front of you while you game?

d10-3 Why such a small avatar? Why not make it BIGGER!!!!!?

d10-4 Cat, Dog, Cow, Chicken, Dinosaur, Gecko, Horse, Llama, duck, or Turtle? Why?

d10-5 Chocolate or Vanilla?

d10-6 What was the situation when you realized what your favorite genre is? Did the realization change your perspective about RPGs?

Hope you have a great week!

regency_rhi wrote:

d10-1 You write so many reviews for adventures and modules - what percentage have you played?

Almost none. In fact, I believe the count may be three, with most of the rest having been sold off. They stem from trying to find some good product. I was unable to find any information at all available for most of the OSR products. I was in a position to do something about it, and so I did. I'm convinced that there is quality product out there, just as there was in the d20 era, however it's hidden by the vast amount of junk, just as in the d20 era.

regency_rhi wrote:

d10-2 What are some of these 5-6 hobbies you have going?

Right now I'm working on a tutorial for turning a game controller in to a PnP MAME emulator. I'm also working on my MAME standup unit, overhauling the monitor system. I'm working on learning German and teaching myself MAC programming by creating character generators for smaller systems. (Battlestations, to start with.) I've got a Fokker DR1 triplane balsa plane I'm glueing up. That doesn't count the ipod, iphone, ds lite, and kobo I'm repairing with the iron or the liquid nitrogen me and the kids are playing with. I spend some time every evening teaching myself piano and have started working on mash-ups on the mac in order to launch myself in to DJ superstardom! I've got 3 RPG projects going also, in addition to the games I'm running.

regency_rhi wrote:

d10-3 What do you loathe about narrative RPGs?

They are useless wastes of time? I got very excited about them when the movement first started but after a few years I came to the conclusion that the Emperor had no clothes. The game was the first version of Lacuna Part I. The Creation of the Mystery and the Girl from Blue City (First Attempt). In Lacuna you can bend the world to your whim. If the world has no limits then what's the control, and so what's the point? This applies to the genre as a whole also. What's the point? "We sat around and told a story!" Hey, that's great! It's not a game, it's an activity. The Extraordinary Adventures of Baron Munchausen is fun when sitting around in formal wear in a nice bar, but it's just goofing off. You need a GM and actual rules to have a game, and to have the satisfactions of accomplishing something. (Even if that something is a failure.) Playing Fiasco last year at Origins is what sealed the deal for me.

regency_rhi wrote:

d10-4 What do you use the geek for the most, and why?

Inflating my own already astronomical ego? I do use it to track things I'm interested in purchasing. Lately I've been trying to use it to purchase OOP products however I'm not having much luck.

regency_rhi wrote:

d10-5 If you could 'convert' one person in your life into a gamer, who would it be?

My daughter is having a rough time and is slipping in to Manga-land. She's been having trouble competing with my son, the wizard, and my wife who plays a mean bard. She wants to be a bad ass who's invaluable to the party. She's tried a thief, and tried a ranger, and is now working on a fighter, however I fear the RPG-gamer trait is not taking the way I wish it would.

regency_rhi wrote:

d10-6 Favourite aspect of roleplaying? Of being a GM?

As a GM: It's always my turn! I also get to be silly and set up great situations for the players to stumble through. I Love it! What happens during the adventure is what's fun, not the story that presented by the GM or scenario.

regency_rhi wrote:

d10-7 Any game been so bad you regret wasting your money on it?

I'm not sure. There's usually some worth in everything. I'm probably going to have a Meetup event to burn 4e books on the day 5e is released, but that doesn't mean it's worthless. Even Module #1: Into the Mite Lair had a purpose serving as an example to others.

regency_rhi wrote:

d10-8 Favourite web comics or blogs?

Oglaf is really good (and very NSFW.) The Hack & Slash blog is nice, as is the Dungeon Dozen. Playing D&D with Porn Stars is nice also, and nothing like the title would imply. I'm following about 450 RPG blogs right now on my iPad; I should go through those this week and pick out a few more.

Actually, no. I called in a few favors and had the core caching servers modified to insert subliminals in to image sources. Considering the browsing habits I thought for sure the effort in furry sources would pay off, but it ended up being crochet patterns. Go figure! That's The network for you.

wavemotion wrote:

Oh the humanity! My ego crushed! Here's a larger version of me poking a module with 10' pole:

wavemotion wrote:

Using Fahrenheit to start fires appeals to me, however I'm going to say The Sil. Nonfiction is irrelevant in that situation so you need something that you can reread an infinite number of times. That makes it The Sil or Finnegan's Wake. I hate Joyce, so it's The Silmarillion.

wavemotion wrote:

d10-2 If you had to spend forever and a day on a remote island (well stocked with food, shelter, pencil, paper, dice and 3-5 friends) what one game (non RPG) would you take with you and why?

There is clearly only one choice here: Magic Realm. Finally enough time to learn how to play the damn thing AND a group of people who have nothing better to do than the same.

wavemotion wrote:

d10-3 If you could play an RPG with any one fellow RPG Geek regular, who would it be and why?

Are you kidding?!? An academic aussie geek girl who knits/crochets? *HAWT*! Besides, I'm a sucker for playing games I hate with people who love them.

wavemotion wrote:

d10-4 If you could play an RPG with any famous person (dead or alive... but not an RPG Geek regular), who would it be and why?

My current Pathfinder Roleplaying Game characters is a retired academic on a sex vacation:
named M. A. R. Barker, so I'm going to say Barker or James M. Ward because OMG! I AM SUCH A GAMMAA WORLD FANBOY! I'm going to Gary Con for my Birthday and am hoping to play in a Ward game of Metamorphosis Alpha.

wavemotion wrote:

d10-5 If you were trapped at a convention and dying to play but all they had were pre-1989 RPGs (i.e. before AD&D 2e), what specific RPG would you play?

All of them. Seriously, all of them. I'll dance to anything by Depeche mode and I'll play any RPG and have fun doing it no matter the game or the DM. I should start a Geeklist with some of my con war stories. I love me some cock^h though; no game is better at a con than Call of Cthulhu (2nd - 6th Edition). It's trivial to have fun at a one-shot CoC game. Nobodies getting out of alive so there's no pressure to do anything but have fun.

wavemotion wrote:

d10-6 If you were trapped at a convention and dying to play but all they had were post-1989 RPGs (i.e. AD&D 2e and beyond), what specific RPG would you play?

Anything I had not played before. Especially if the author is running it. I love playing something run by the author. All games have a certain play style to them that is generally best illustrated by playing with the designer. How about ... Mouse Guard! I'll be a knight named Itchy armed with a piece of dried pasta as my lance, riding my faithful horse Sir Benton in a slightly younger version of Don Quixote!

A Boogie Burger or Boogie Fries, hmmm, it's like Sophie's Choice ... I'm going for the fries THIS time. Next time though I'm getting Mr Dans.

I'm taking the Clean Air. DDT is too useful to give up.

As a good American all of my nurture says Democracy. Besides all of the moaning about dysfunctional is silly. People complain about the most silly of things.

TOAST. RYE TOAST! With lox and capers.

MARY. ANN. I don't like blond porn babes, and Ginger is a fine example of the genre, even if she's not blonde.

Bacon. Barely rendered.

It's a constant struggle vs apathy and ennui. Goofing off online, Tv, and porn are great ways to loose large amounts of time. I try to highly regulate those activities. In addition I find that just DOING something solves a =lot of problems. Many people fret and obsess over details. Just telling yourself to piss off and actually doing whatever it is solves most problems. After awhile you learn that you can do anything, even create time where none previously existed.

Oh, and don't do work at work. That creates LOADS of time.

a) No tableclothe. I find them hideous. Nor will you find plastic on the couch/chairs or be required to take your shoes off. I bought the shit to enjoy it and use it not to obsess over its condition.

b) Funky japanese snacks from the asian grocery with salt & vinegar chips. Maybe cheetos and nuts; depends on the mood.

c) Since it's a one-shot then cock^h.

d) Clara Bow, Emperor Nero, Eugene V Debs and Francis Bacon.

e) Clara is tribesman from Borneo and the tank. Nero is a germanic princess during the 100 years war and plays a blood sorcerer. Debs is the thief. Nobody cares about Bacon and forgets he's there.

f) That asshole Debs tries to Nero had his ass from the start. Unfortunately for him, Clara had plots within plots.

g) Bacon flies under the radar and pulls the parties ass out of the fire, but no one cares with Clara, Nero and Debs at the table.Nero hooks up with Clara so he wins.
