++Perhaps Gizem has some leads on where we might find somebody like that, even without specifics. Let's prod.++

"Gizem my boy, that is fantastic information. My transcriber is scribbling notes as we speak. It is so refreshing to get the information straight up from a local, not from some reconstituted generic tour guide. You hungry, boy?" he asks as the group passes a street vendor.

Rex waits until they travel by a group of KPA dockworkers or other slave class. "Say, Gizem, I used to know a man - had to sell himself off into slavery to pay off a debt to some brutal hypercorp, just so that his wife and kids could stay homeless instead of get imprisoned. How's that for a life? Anyway, I heard a rumor he got shipped off here at one point, working the docks now. Or then. Who knows if he's still alive, eh? Always worked best in a synth, so I imagine that's what they would have done with him. It sure would be funny to run into him. Where would somebody like that hang out?"

There are no KPA slave workers around, the only KPA you see are friendly looking officials. But the food vendure you have stopped at (they advertise selling the newest and spiciest Venusian foods ) have cooks that are in cheap, branded synth morphs, obviously indentured servants.

"If he is working in the docks, he would be in the docks I guess. The two lowest levels, one dock for passanger traffic, and for regular transports. The Ultimates keep their dockworkers on a short leash. They have almost unlimited access in the dock and most of the fortress. But I have never seen anyone outside the docks," He looks around nervously "not that I have ever been there ofcourse."

"Of course! Merely providing some entertaining speculation for your clients. Storytelling is an important part of being a guide, after all," Rex says with a smile.

++It seems our understanding of the situation was quite mistaken. Perhaps we should indeed use the Lokehula as a base to reconsider our next move. The crowds should offer adequate distraction for any prying eyes.++

++ Information. We need information before we move anywhere. Bob, I assume you are the best at Mesh interrogations? We need to find any local information on Sven Anderson in this area that is working for the KPA in a synthmorph. It sounds like a pretty clean-cut search. We need to find his location, loves, lifestyle, politics, debts -- anything that can make it easier to convince him to come with us. ++

++Indeed, I believe Bob already made a good run. It seems to me we will have to do some investigation in meat space to learn more. Perhaps find some loose tongues among the KPA elite?++

"Tell me, Gizem, where do the movers and shakers on this cluster entertain themselves - when they deign to leave the fortress, of course, or those they ally with. It would be good for my readers to know where to dine and drink, of course."

“There are plenty of places the rich and powerful go, both from here and from other places, but the Ultimates? No, they only keep to themselves. No fun at all for those guys, “ He looks a bit nervous over to Gavin. “But there are a few that work for them, that are allowed access because of their special skills. They have a Mesh expert, calling himself Leonid Flare, and there is that creepy guy from the Lost Generation. Or at least I think he is Lost, he has a Futura Morph. They work for the Ultimates, and do spend their cash around the Cluster.”

“He does earn, and spend, some serious Lira. But I couldn't tell you where he is right now. But I could check with my sources, see what I find.”

We have been going “real-time” for some time now. Perhaps you would like to just narrate some stretch of time at once. Get you settled in or something. I am also a bit worried that Samuel hasn't posted in a while.

Sam has been really busy at work the past bit. That's why I was trying to stretch this out a bit, try to give him a chance to get involved and help make the decision as to what we do next. If I speak to him today, I'll try to get him to drop by.

"Excellent, many thanks, Gizem!" Rex says with a wide smile. "I believe while you are away I shall sample the local tourist traps and compose my review!"

Then, over the mesh:

++I think it wise to hide in plain sight for now, letting us blend in with the other tourists. It seems to me we cannot attract much attention that way.++

Karl, I'm going to assume that (a) we don't have an expense account from Firewall, and (b) we can't write this trip off as a business expense, it being a secret organization and all....

++Agreed! I suggest a mid-range tourist hotel as close as we can get to the areas of interest - the docks and fortress. The Lokehula may be as close as we can get.++

After finding a place to stay, Rex begins to explore the lower stem. Sticking scrupulously to publicly accessible thoroughfares, he tries to get a feel for the layout and the different social groups interacting around the docks, chatting up as many "people" as he can. He'll avoid asking anything even remotely incriminating: the goal is just to understand how the Kronos Cluster works, from the ground up (metaphorically ).

He'll also be sure to spend small amounts of money on trinkets and such, in an effort to look more or less like a normal - though incredibly chatty - tourist.

Very good question. I think most locals can see he is not KPA, and it is not unheard of for Ultimates to come here for different reasons. At the same time, many would think that he has something to do with the local Ultimates. What the tourists thinks would depend on where he or she was from. The ultimates have a fearful reputation

We should be able to arrange a private room in Lokehula as a meeting/fallback location. It's centrally located, highly trafficked, and anonymous. We can get back together once we do some more research. I will head to the docks myself in the pretense of visiting a few ships and see what might be possible there. After that, I will need to find some slimy rocks to look under for less salubrious assistance. I should be able to find some people who aren't friends of the KPA and be willing to help if things get a bit dicey.

Chung has a few goals:

The video showed Sven working on a merchant ship, so Dae-Ho is going to try and gain access to that area of the station and give it a once over. He'll get a list of ships in port looking for hands, and offer his services to gain access (using his various skills of Piloting, Customs, Smuggling, Persuasion to provide a convincing resume). While there, he can inquire about Sven with the dock workers.

After, he will head out to a less reputable location (probably a sleezy local casino in a lower-stem cluster) in search of a more capable criminal element than Gizem -- possible the Night Cartel, Nine Lives, or a local gang that acts in a similar way. Hopefully, they can provide some information or have contacts inside the KPA. If nothing else, they may be useful to call on for favors later.

Networking: Criminal 55 1d100 = (82) = 82

Edit: Um, yeah, that's just screaming for a MOXIE POINT. Make that roll a 28, please whistle

Finally, Chung will download the "Rapid decelpment in hyper-structured cognitive machines" thesis and set his muse to deciphering bits he can use in case Mr. Anderson needs a reminder of who he was. Lacking any relevant skills, I don't really hope to actually appreciate the thesis, just be able to get across who he is. Later on, I might just start wondering what's so special about this guy that I'm being paid to risk my extremely long neck for...

//Keep a hold of yourself, Dae-Ho. This case is business -- don't make it personal. Sven may have had the same blasted luck you had escaping Earth, but Firewall isn't paying enough to invite a slow, tortuous death from the KPA if this group screws it up. Play it just like any other job -- slow and careful, and ready to disappear if the heat get suspicious. Just a job.\\

Despite his efforts, Dae-Ho wondered if he could keep his normal detachment.

Looking at Rex's skills, I'm going to take a slightly different tack.

The groundwork described above is to understand the social structure. Since it's run by anarchists, I'll try this:

Networking [autonomists] 1d100 = (18) = 18 (target 50)

Once that's done, and if there's time, he's going to start combing the far-future Twitterverse and other crowdsourced reporting outlets active on the Kronos Cluster, looking for the movers and shakers in the local media, such as it is, and subtly getting his pieces and observations in their vision.

Networking [media] 1d100 = (99) = 99 (target 60)

Edit: Oh dear. Methinks that last roll did not go well.

Horrible spelling mistake, that is of course supposed to be “development”.

There are plenty of criminal gangs on the Cluster, but they are all deadly afraid of the KPA. After carefully asking around Chung gets in contact with an underground hacking collective. They have been waiting for an opportunity to screw the KPA over, and have found several faults in the KPA security. They freely volunteer their services, and can be used to ease entry or infiltration to off-limits areas, if that would be needed.

Chung discovers that getting entry into the parts of the port used for merchant traffic is very hard, thought it is easy to get a list of ships and get in contact with their crew.

I am going to need a roll here of some kind, to deal with the smugglers/traders/merchants.

-

Rex finds many people willing to talk to him. The place is a balkanized by various groups, all working under the watchful eye of the KPA. It doesn't take him long to figure out who works together, who are enemies, and what level of violence they prefer. He also gets a rough idea about the different groups attitude towards the KPA.

Perhaps not much Steven. But remind me of this roll. It might give you more information with specific stuff later. He has a wealth of information, I can't write it all, and if I write something, I will force you very strongly in that direciton.

-

While are running your errands you have set up base in a gambling room in Lokahula. It isn't big, it has a few couch and table used for card games. Most of the interior is red velvet and the carpet is deep green. There is a strange odour in the room, it smells of chemicals.

After your first venture out, you spend some time talking and relaxing. There is a monitor on, and you are watching what goes for news in this place, the gossip/news program simply called “The FreeVine”.

You turn up the volume when you see a picture of Rex. “In other news, the noted journalist Rex Redrocks out of Mars is visiting the station. While Mr. Redrocks has a very limited audience in the outer system, he is well known amongst the autonomists of Mars. Why he is here? No one knows? But it seems he might be writing an expose on the KPA, as he has been asking plenty of questions about them.”

I'm getting itchy to make a roll, so I want to use Gavin's connections with the local Hypercorps to see if they can help with our mission.

Mr. Locke looks around Lokahula, trying to find a connection that can give him some information that can help them find Mr. Anderson or why he was brought here.

Networking [Hypercorps] 1d100 = (51) = 51 - target 55

After watching the report about Rex on the news, I say "Well, Gentlemen, it appears that someone knows we are here. I hope that it does not prove to be our undoing."
