Description Edit | History

The vampire that walks the World of Darkness is an undead creature. It is a former human being that has undergone the Embrace of a vampire, being completely drained of blood and then fed some by his sire. This causes the corpse to rise as a (very hungry) vampire, usually instantly. The vampire who initiates the Embrace is the Sire; the new vampire is the Sire's Childe. Vampires need blood (which they call vitae) in order to sustain their undead bodies. It can be human, animal or vampiric blood (but animal blood is not as good, and vampiric blood has potentially troublesome supernatural properties — such as the ability to create a blood bond). Vampires will sweat blood and cry blood under certain circumstances. Blood is also used to get up and move; every night, vampires expend a certain amount of blood to rise. In addition, vampires can use blood to enhance their physical attributes and use supernatural powers called Disciplines. Blood is used to Embrace, as noted above, and also to create Ghouls. Finally, vampires can use blood to heal damage.

The feeding process is highly pleasurable (arguably the highest pleasure) for vampires, and is also extremely pleasurable for victims. Vessels who are drained regularly can become addicted to the Kiss. Vampires change considerably after the Embrace. Physically, they are incapable of eating food, vomiting it up almost instantly. As a result of these processes, the vampire is paler and generally thinner than they were before the Embrace. Certain clans have more extreme physical changes. In addition to the physical changes, vampires experience extreme intellectual and emotional changes. The vampire is now a predator, and has a raging id called the Beast. The Beast reacts to a variety of stimuli, notably hunger, anger, fear. The Beast continuously assaults the character, and if the Beast's demands exceed the character's own capacity to control it, will react in a Frenzy or Rötschreck. Vampires can permanently lose control to the Beast, entering Wassail, a state of permanent Frenzy. In this condition, all humanity is lost and the vampire becomes a mindless killing machine.

Vampires fear fire and sunlight. They receive serious damage from both (sunlight is absolutely lethal after very short exposure). Vampires are also vulnerable to so-called "True Faith", that is, the strength of a person's conviction in something (which is, fortunately for vampires, very rare). Such faith need not be religious per se — someone with a strong faith in the power of the almighty dollar could repel a vampire with a credit card. Driving a stake through a vampire's heart will not kill him but will paralyze him. Vampires are immune to most diseases, drugs and poisons, but can be affected by some if present in the blood of their victims. Vampires are not affected by garlic, silver or the like, and usually cannot be appeased with offerings (as in some traditions). However, some vampires have specific weaknesses, such as needing some earth from their place of birth to sleep.

Clans

Vampires belong to certain clans and factions; some vampires belong to a bloodline, which is essentially a sub-clan. They are also split among two species: western "Cainite" and the East/Southeast Asian "Kuei-jin". Old clan crests (circa 1200) are on the left and the modern ones on the right.

Character: Tzimisce
Tzimisce Eastern Europe The Tzimisce have left the human condition behind gladly, and now focus on transcending the limitations of the vampiric state. At a casual glance or a brief conversation a Tzimisce appears to be one of the more pleasant vampires. Polite, intelligent and inquisitive they seem a stark contrast to the howling Sabbat mobs or even the apparently more humane Brujah or Nosferatu. However on closer inspection it becomes clear that this is simply a mask hiding something alien and monstrous.
Character: Lasombra

Character: Vampire (World of Darkness)
Character: Vampire (World of Darkness)
Salubri India Once mighty, the Salubri Clan has become barely a bloodline after the destruction of their progenitor, Saulot. Rumored to only be composed of seven vampires at any time, the modern Salubri search for Golconda - enacting a bloody ritual when they achieve that state or despair of ever doing so.
Character: Cappadocian
Character: Vampire (World of Darkness)
Cappadocian Western Asia Detached scholars obsessed with the mysteries of death and the soul. Due to their inherent clan weakness, all Cappadocians have a corpse-like complexion, resembling death.

Special

Character: Caitiff
Caitiff Mixed A vampire of unknown clan, or of no clan at all. The clanless have no inherent clan society, support, or even characteristics; they are like orphans among the great families of vampires.
Autarkis Mixed A vampire that remains outside the larger vampire society and often refuses to acknowledge the claim of a Prince, Archbishop, Baron, sect, clan, or other such entity. These Autarkis often lead solitary unlives not unlike hermits or outcasts. In some cases, an Autarkis is beneath notice, in other cases, the Autarkis is simply too powerful or otherwise ungovernable for the local sect to bring under its sway.

Sects

A social organization of vampires, usually composed of multiple clans that form a league or compact. Each sect has a dogma and an objective its members seek to attain.

Character: Camarilla
Camarilla The largest of vampiric sects, a loose organization which ostensibly represents and protects all vampires by enforcing and promulgating the Masquerade. Much of the Camarilla's approach to maintaining order involve enacting the Traditions, which among other things means supporting a system of feudal domains and the responsibilities of sires for the conduct of their childer.
Character: Sabbat
Sabbat The Sabbat believes in the Antediluvians and Caine, as they believe they will be the army Caine will use to destroy the Antediluvians once Gehenna arrives. The Sabbat has many ways of identifying its members: the sect has an official color (purple), an official symbol (an inverted ankh), and dozens, if not hundreds, of specific signs, passwords, and gestures that theoretically let one member identify another. In practice, few Sabbat can recognize more than a few of these signs - most learn to identify one another by face at ritae or other sect gatherings.
Character: Anarch
Anarch Vampires who reject the status quo, with traditional strongholds in Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco. Most of the Anarchs respect and uphold the Masquerade and some of the other Traditions, even if they do not respect the vampires who enforce them or the system that benefits from them. The Anarchs especially resent the privileged status held by elders within the Camarilla and other vampire sects.
Independent Clan Major vampiric clans that claim descent from Caine, but no allegiance to any of the Cainite sects. Despite their independence, most of these clans are willing to work with the sects, or at least within their territories, within reason.
Character: Vampire (World of Darkness)
Ashirra The sect under which Islamic vampires declare their faith in Allah. Members of the Ashirra believe that redemption for the Kindred was among the promises Muhammad made if they chose to follow Allah.

Instead, Laibon forge their lives around two separate paths of Morality: Aye, which is their morality towards humankind, and Orun, which is their morality towards the supernatural.
Inconnu An extremely secretive sect of vampires. Virtually nothing is known for certain about them, but some of the most popular theories claim the group is a coalition of methuselahs that exists to manipulate both the Camarilla and Sabbat from behind the scenes.
Character: Vampire (World of Darkness)
Tal'Mahe'Ra An ancient death-cult devoted to the worship of a cabal of beings known as the Aralu, whom it believed to be Antediluvians, that slept in the ghost-city of Enoch deep within the lands of the dead.
