Description Edit | History

In the game, players take the role of werewolves known as "Garou" (from the French loup garou). These werewolves are locked in a two-front war against both the spiritual desolation of urban civilization and supernatural forces of corruption that seek to bring about the Apocalypse. The Garou were made to defend the earth from the Wyrm (end bringer), Weaver (reality spinner), and Wyld (unbridled creation). The Weaver and Wyrm are the primary threat, having many agents and many faces, all bent on the utter destruction of Gaia (earth). The Garou are fighting to keep the Apocalypse from coming, but they are dying out and losing the war.

The werewolves are the ultimate predators in the World of Darkness, but are fighting to survive in an increasingly modern world, clinging to the old ways. Adding to their troubles is the fact that only one in ten offspring of a Garou turns out to be Garou themselves; the rest are full human or wolf. Worse still, ordinary wolves have been nearly hunted to extinction, leaving the Garou with very few wolf mates. Thus they have had to make do with humans, thinning the primal instincts of the Garou. One way to guarantee Garou offspring is to mate with another Garou. However, due to an ancient curse, any offspring produced this way are deformed and sterile. The Garou are a divided people, separated along lines of breed, auspice, tribe, and values, all contributing to a conflict of ideals.

Fera (shapeshifters)

While the Garou were created by Gaia as her fangs and claws, to keep her safe, they were not her only children. She created many other breeds of shapeshifters and gave them each a task. Some have lost their way with time; others were forced from their roles by the Garou.

Ajaba Hyena Africa While the War of Rage did not reach Africa, the Ajaba were all but destroyed by infighting. The survivors were exiled from their traditional homelands, but in recent years the Ajaba woman Kisasi rallied the Fera of Africa and formed an alliance. The most notable trait of the Ajaba is that they are strongly divided along gender lines: female Ajaba are warriors, with generally high Rage and lower Gnosis; males are mystics, with opposite tendencies.

Ananasi Spider Africa The Damhàn consider themselves children of Queen Ananasa, an ancient and powerful spider spirit created by the Weaver itself. As creatures of the Weaver, they seek to keep true balance between the forces of the Triat, fulfilling the Weaver's original purpose. While "true" Ananasi serve the force of balance and harmony that the Weaver once represented, many have been corrupted by the Wyrm.

Apis (Extinct) Auroch Asia/Europe Much of the Apis’ existence focused on the cycle of birth, reproduction, and death. Apis mystics had magic to find a person’s destined mate, and if they had difficulty conceiving, the Apis could aid that process as well. For the Apis, there was no greater honor than to bring a person into the world, advise him during his life, and then escort him out of it, acting as their charge’s midwife, teacher, and pallbearer.

Bastet Cat Everywhere Obsessed with secret knowledge and are always pursuing and hoarding it. Many are great magicians, others are great warriors, but they are rarely pack animals and generally work alone. Rather than given a specific purpose, each tribe attempts to fill a gap where others didn't quite catch on. Bastet have a fairly consolidated system to track renown and share many spiritual aspects.
Camazotz (Extinct) Bat Mexico/South America Camazotz were Gaia's other messengers, counterparts of the Corax who flew through the night and the southern lands which did not have ravens. Many were greatly alarmed by the werebats' chiropteran shapes and blood rituals, which reminded them of their ancient enemies, the Tzimisce vampires. A handful of Umbral travelers claim that the Camazotz are not yet dead. Though they have no totem, the last werebats still serve Gaia as spies and messengers throughout the Deep Umbra.

Corax Raven Everywhere They take to their role as scouts, spies, and gossips with zeal. They are one of the few, if not the only, groups of shifters still on good terms with the Garou after the War of Rage. Corax are well known for flying, talking (and talking, and talking...), performing practical jokes on deserving Garou, and swooping down from the sky to nab dimes and tin foil. Most of all, they have a reputation for knowing things.

Character: Garou
Garou Wolf Everywhere Garou were designed to be Gaia's fangs and claws and they are quite adept at this. To continue their bloodlines, werewolves must mate with either humans or wolves. Garou adhere to the Litany, a code which depicts the laws of the Garou Nation.

Grondr (Extinct) Boar Northern Europe The Grondr were destroyed during the War of Rage when they came to the aid of the Gurahl. Their Kinfolk were enslaved and their beast Kin domesticated, though the last true Grondr Kin eventually sought the aid of the Wyrm, and were corrupted into the Skull Pigs. Their purpose was to be Gaia's cleaners and groomers, tending to the Earth's health by rooting out filth and parasites.

Gurahl Bear Everywhere Gurahl are Gaia's original protectors, created to ward off the destructive power of the "Pattern Breaker". When it grew too powerful for them, they petitioned Gaia for help, and she created the Garou. Slow to anger, Gurahl tend to be healers and protectors rather than warriors. Rare since the War of Rage, they were targeted for refusing to teach the Garou the secret of resurrecting the dead.

Kitsune Fox Asia Kitsune acted as assassins of the corrupt authorities in mortal society, as court wizards and thieves in order to protect the Heavenly Mandate. Kitsune often try to teach lessons through their tricks. Seeing as they were created with the last of the strength of the Emerald Mother, they cannot heal how the other changers can.

Mokolé Crocodile Everywhere The Mokolé serve the role of the memories of Gaia through the practice of Mnesis. Although they can be very social with their own kind, these shapeshifters are generally distrustful towards outsiders. A trait that all Mokolé share is the Mnesis ability, which allows them to remember thousands to millions of years into the past. During the age of dinosaurs, the Mokolé were at their peak of evolution, having built a culture that rivaled that of mortals in their prime.

Nagah Serpent Everywhere They act as Gaia's "secret police", assassins and judges who target and eliminate those among the Fera who fall to corruption. The Nagah have a strong affiliation to water, which is shown in their amphibious snake forms and their aquatic Ananatas. Many spirits that are in league with them have also ties to this element. The Nagah possess the best sensory abilities of human and snake - however, these abilities are often contradictory.

Nuwisha Coyote North America The Nuwisha fill the role of "Gaia's Teachers". They are aware that Gaia's other children, particularly the Garou, are stubborn learners, and so typically trick people into learning things, rather than just directly telling them information. Metis do not exist, for either spiritual reasons or the fact that two were-coyotes tend not to stick together long enough to have a child. The Nuwisha take great pride not only in teaching others, but learning a great many things themselves. To that end, they are aware and interact with most if not all of the other changing breeds.

Ratkin Rat Everywhere Thier mission was to control the human population by eating their food and spreading disease and pestilence. It worked until the Garou attempted to impose their dominance on the other Breeds. Ratkin were forced into the margins of human society; however, because of the rapid urban growth, they recovered and once again are in ascendance. Ratkin are feral and brutal creatures, mainly because they are Wyld-touched, which means that not only can they frenzy like other shapeshifters, but also hallucinate in a state called Rapture.

Rokea Shark Everywhere Even the sea has its protectors. The weresharks patrol the depths of the sea and are rarely seen by land dwellers. The Rokea claim to be the first of the Changing Breeds, as Sea existed before solid land appeared on Gaia and sharks predate all land-born predators. Rokea are effectively immortal. They can not die naturally; once they reach adulthood, their aging process stops.
