Description

Physical Description

Personality

Obliging, helpful, inquisitive, open-minded. Doubts the tenets of the Temple in secrecy.

Background

Nikolas was born in Gouvran. His father Moreg was a tinkerer of sorts who created small metal items. His mother Fiarang worked as a seamstress and had a lovely voice when she sung during work.
Nikolas was fascinated by the high skill his father had and the precision with which he worked his items. Some of his works had mechanical parts that fascinated Nikolas in a particular way but he realized early on that he lacked in creativity what his father seemed to have in abundance. Still the boy showed a keen reasoning and his parents saw no better place for Nikolas than to send him to the monastery of Gouvran for studies.
It turned out that Nikolas had a natural interest in the sciences. He found a mentor in brother Poquelin, who taught him everything about medicine. The functioning of the various body parts, the human conditions and diseases, what wounds and fractions a body can and cannot endure. He learned about various poisons and drugs and their effects on the body and mind. Often he would enjoy the evenings with brother Poquelin and Marcus, a fellow student, and discuss sagacious topics. Together the two would spent days studying in the monastery library.
The religious texts of the Temple Nikolas knew by heart. They were more mere stories to him, instead of factual things that actually happened, though. With Brother Marcus he would also in secrecy discuss other topics that both of them felt were neglected by old master Poquelin - such obscure fields like Occultism and Magience that the Temple would find sacrilegious.
Under the supervision of master Poquelin, Marcus and Nikolas would often help the authorities of the monastery with everyday medical tasks, like tending to the sick and wounded. Sometimes, and for Nikolas these were the more rewarding tasks, the city guard would consult them about more unusual things. The mysterious deaths of townspeople and strange cases that no one could explain turned out to be quite mundane at a second glance: a murderous widow who poisoned her husband, a sibling who backstabbed his brother in his sleep, a granary with an infestation of ergot that caused strange hallucinations among the residents of a nearby village.
One day, when master Poquelin was away for a couple of weeks, something terrible happened. Marcus brought the head of a dead beast to the laboratory that was washed to the shore and found by fishermen who thought it was from some blasphemous monstrosity. Despite the warnings of Nikolas, Marcus continued to experiment on the head that was covered in thick fungal like pustules. He wanted to show that it belonged to a normal animal that had just been afflicted by some sort of rash or other disease. After a week Marcus started to show the first signs of a rash that paired with a high fever several days later. His hair was starting to fall out and Nikolas tried what he could, every medicine their master had taught him about, but it was in vain. On the third day of the fever, Marcus seemed to recuperate from it. The sweating had stopped and he started to look better, although he still looked like a mess. His behavior had changed though. His voice became eerily high pitched and he would start to wander through the monastery and speak out loud and heretically against the doctrines of the Temple. Marcus got locked-in and was charged for his sacrilegious expressions and doings. Despite Nikolas best efforts to intervene, nobody would listen to him at the monastery. Especially incriminating was Marcus’ notebook which contained several occult notes and profane theories. Nikolas was relieved when master Poquelin returned from his journeys but the old monk was neither able to convince the hardheads of the Temple that Marcus’ condition was a symptom of some yet unknown medical affliction. Marcus was “purified” until he could no longer be recognized and died shortly after his treatment.
During the trials a very inquisitive and fervent sirige of the Temple named Blothas heavily accused Marcus of heresy. It was his words that pushed the trial against Nikolas’ friend for the worse. Blothas even accused Nikolas of heresy, but such claims could be quickly refuted.
This event was a turning point in Nikolas’ life. After a while when things settled down a bit and his old mentor seemed to have recovered enough from the shock, Nikolas told him that he would leave the monastery and go on a personal pilgrimage to come to terms with himself again. The old man agreed and Nikolas went to the east until he came to a remote village by the name of Niddire.
He was eager to offer his services as a physician to the rural people and by his open and welcoming ways quickly made friends with the otherwise reclusive villagers.
Among the people he has met in Niddire are
Maveen, the blacksmith, from whom he buys his pliers and scalpels, after he had explained how the finer instruments are constructed;
Morwenna, a handsome herbalist who is not only the best friend of Maveen but whom he also enjoyed talking over the last couple of weeks over various things. It was the closest of a conversation in the way it used to be with Marcus he had in a while and Morwenna seems like a really lovely person;
Alas, whenever the two of them meet the shadow of Saroc, a shady and foul mouthed trader of sorts, seems to hang around them. Nikolas is not decided on where to put this guy for now. He seemed quite resourceful though, when Nikolas had some requests for rarer ingredients that Morwenna couldn’t get by herself.
A short while ago Valbrand came to the village as well. Nikolas was happy to see his old friend from childhood days again. About the same time that Nikolas went to the monastery, Valbrand followed another call of the Temple and became a blade knight. Nikolas hopes that Valbrand and he can get to understand each other as they used to do as they were younger and that the blade knight would stop to dully repeat the tenets of their face in front of Nikolas.
Niolaus has made contact with the local cleric of the Temple. An elderly man whose drinking habits is an open secret among the villagers. (I hope that fits with what the others had in mind with him…).
He is one of the few locals he can have a more intellectual conversation.
He also helped several local farmers with various health problems. Balduin had a sore tooth that Nikolas extracted with the help of a thread and the barn’s door. Monnagal had some livestock that Nikolas helped to recover from a broken leg. Finnarf and his young wife Gudrun expect their first child in a couple of days and Nikolas has met them when he had a chat with Morwenna – she will be their midwife and Nikolas had offered his help as well.
Nikolas lives in a house central to the village. The house is owned by Deabra, an elderly and quite gossipy woman that turned out to have a nephew that lives in the monastery of Gouvran. Nikolas helps the woman as best as he can with her everyday chores and by writing and reading a letter for her every other week.
In the tavern, Nikolas has befriended with Gladdis, a jovial brick of a woman who knows about everyone and everything (just as about everyone does in a small place like this, I guess…)
